For all of my students I start by allowing them to sit and feel the kit. Building a strong trusting relationship is important. I then proceed to dive into teaching simple 4/4 grooves to loosen the student up which processes into teaching basic rhythm studies and eventually the concepts of feel, groove, dynamics and of course timing. Introduce something new each lesson, and juggle the "lessons" a little, until they settle. We sometimes work on grooves that are on songs the student likes, and would like to learn to play. I will break the groove apart and go over it together with the students. Rudiments and hand technique are important to have.
