My go-to books for Drummers, beginners and advanced are 1. Advanced technique for the modern drummer by Jim Chapin and 2. Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone. No matter what you listen to, the material in these books can be applied to any style. Another tip is to learn what influenced your favorite players. I Guarantee every one of your favorite drummers has studied this book. It contains beginner techniques through the most prominent advanced skills. Read More

I like to start younger students off with sticking, familiarity with the instrument, basic rudiments and basic notation/reading. Once they have a grasp on basic rhythmic concepts, I like to teach functional grooves so students can begin to play music with others. My emphasis is peformance, and teaching functional grooves/ideas/fills as well as classic percussion literature helps students feel confident in performing. For older students, I try and help develop the tools needed express themselves in their chosen style. Read More

During my time teaching at Victor Litz Music, where I taught for 12 years, I was lucky to work with one student who had severe dyslexia. Though he had difficulty in a classroom setting, this students general reading and musical skills blossomed over the course of several years of instruction. Through patience and a customized approach I was able to reach him in ways that, according to his parents, no other teacher was able to do. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I am a very dynamic teacher. I like to commit to my students, motivate them to find their own music. One of my goals is to spread the idea that music is inside the person and not in the instrument. It is important find the inner music through ear training, rhtyhmic exercises and improvisation games, so student can develop musical skills that will lead them to enjoy the practice and grow as a performers. The most important is to undersrand what a new student's goals are with their music education. I wouldn't want to push someone to do something that they simply aren't interested in, but I usually am able to help someone develop interest in areas that they don't already have an interest in. For example, many beginning drummers are sure that they only have interest in playing drum set for a band. Read More
