My school couldn't afford to fund faculty to lead the drumline, so during my junior and senior years, I took on the role of teaching new students, some of whom had never even held a drumstick, to be performance-ready in a short amount of time. Teaching the most basic concepts in how to build a chord or a scale by using formulas is my favorite way to approach the lesson. An individual's understanding of music is always changing therefore I feel it is better to change with them. Using methods which are proven is important, but the idea of improvisation during a lesson always keeps the interest for me and the student. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Evansville with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance and a Jazz Studies Certificate. During the summer of 2013, I attended New York University's Broadway Percussion Seminar and took private lessons on Timpani and sight reading. Then we will put sticks in your hands and learn technique, and finally introduce reading music. One step at a time is the best as to not overwhelm the student.
