My teaching philosophy is pretty simple and I describe it with these three words clear, direct, and creative. I believe that when it comes to teaching a teacher must be creative, since not all students learn the same way. Also a teacher must be simple and direct in his teachings. A lot of the times teachers tend to give too much information that goes over the head of the students. Read More

When I receive a new student the first thing I do is assess where they are technically and what their interests are. From there I develop custom lesson plans that are design to improve a certain technique while learning new music. For example if a student comes in and really loves Michael Jackson's music but doesn't know how to hold the drumsticks or read music, I will give them basic exercises to improve their lack of technical ability and then we'll apply it to a song. I began teaching quite early in my own guitar playing experience. Once I had the basics down, my friends would ask me to come to their house to show them how to play a few chords. It wasn't until close to 5 years ago when those friends kindly asked me to start teaching their children. It was then when I realized how much I loved teaching, so much in fact that I resigned from a cushy 9-5 office job to pursue teaching full time. Read More

I've been teaching music in Los Angeles for 7 years! Upon arriving, I began studying guitar and everything else music at Musicians Institute in Hollywood California. It's here that I studied with a few jazz aficionados, perfected blues technique, studied chord theory and all inner workings of a song and it's structure, and more! Most importantly, I learned how to be a musician and artist. I began writing music, performing my songs and interacting with people all over the city. Read More

My teaching experience started by teaching private lessons in my personal studio to students and have been doing so for the past 4 years. Always encouraging my students to be determined in their studies, always reminding them to have FUN! I also expanded my teaching to an after school program L.A.C.E.R for Hollywood High school, where I taught both Rock Band and Marching Band. Through all this teaching experience I have learned how to adapt to any kind of student wether is on a private setting or a big group setting. Read More

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My great grandfather and maternal grandmother were both musically inclined on piano and violin. My great grandfather was a professional composer in the Philippines.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I have been a jazz fan for so long but now pop music that combines elements of jazz harmony is what I gravitate towards. Jazz is challenging on all levels.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I use Hal Leonard and Alfred method books for beginning students who want to learn the basic music rudiments of learning how to read music.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
My practice session typically includes warm up exercises using scales and chord melody arrangements then after I'm warmed up, I usually focus on repertoire.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Touring with 2x Grammy Award winning artist Sarah MclachLan and performing on American television for the first time (the Tonight Show) definitely stands out! Scoring my first Feature Film and getting some award nominations for scoring was also a highlight!

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Carley Rae Jepsen is an artist I worked with that went on to write the biggest hit world wide in 2012 "Call Me Maybe.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I think the art of improvisation is a lifetime pursuit but generally mastering chords and solos is also an ongoing jorney...

When will I start to see results?
Results will depend on the student, but generally most enthusiastic learners will start to see their practicing pay off in 2-4 lessons!

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My teachers were the guitarists that I looked up to when I first heard them play....like Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I remember in 7th grade a classmate brought his brother's electric guitar to school for show & tell and I was immediately mesmerized!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child shows a lot of enthusiasm that is consistent and asks about learning the guitar on a regular basis, then that's a good start. If they are constantly listening to guitar oriented music, that's a sure sign that the motivation will be there. Sometimes a child's hands may be too small initially. This needs to be evaluated in an introductory lesson or meeting.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I became a professional musician at the age of 16 or 17 and first performed live with my first band at the age of 14. Thinking of it as a career path was a gradual decision...

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Always keep the instrument within reach. Make it accessible! Never leave it in it's case when you come home. Ideally keep it in the room where you spend the most time and create an environment that promotes focused practicing and is conducive to practicing. Have a music stand set up, a portable stereo system perhaps, and have all your music within easy reach. Keep the guitar on a stand where you can just grab it and even if it's to sit on the couch and play while watching TV....Anything that makes you want to grab the guitar is good!
