Overview:

Welcome to my world of melodies and harmonies! I'm Michael P., a passionate and gifted piano teacher, dedicated to nurturing musical talents and spreading the joy of playing the piano, and understanding music theory. With over 30 years of experience and a deep love for music, I have had the privilege of guiding numerous students on their musical journeys, helping them unlock their potential and create beautiful music. Many of my students have become music majors in college, and professional musicians.

EXPERIENCE

My own musical journey began as early as I can remember spending hours experimenting with toy pianos in my room. At 5 yrs old, in kindergarten the enchanting sound of piano caught my attention in a school performance by Jose Norman, a magical performer, and composer for Desi Arnaz, composer of the song Cuban Pete. I was drawn to the expressive nature of the piano, and its ability to convey emotions without words. From that moment, I knew that I had found my calling. I embarked on a journey of musical exploration, diving into classical compositions, copying TV Themes, and contemporary melodies. This eclectic mix of genres has enriched my understanding of music and allows me to connect with students from diverse musical backgrounds. I went on to study guitar at GIT/Musician's Institute, studying guitar with Scott Henderson, and bass guitar with Jeff Berlin. After graduating from the one year course at Musician's Institute I attended CSUN and studied with concert pianists Jacob Gimple, and Charles Fierro, earning my degree in Composition/Piano. While in school friends and family asked me to teach them, and I found I had a special talent to teach. I joined the Music Teacher's Association of California and within a year had more students than I had time for. I was also writing music for short films, and commercial jobs. I wrote music at night, and taught during the day. I have been successful doing both ever since, and have been fortunate to build a wonderful home studio in my house in Encino CA.

METHODS USED

As a devoted classical piano teacher, my teaching method revolves around nurturing a deep appreciation for the art of piano playing while guiding my students through the standard repertoire. With years of experience under my belt, I have come to understand the importance of a structured yet flexible approach that caters to each student's individuality. At the core of my teaching philosophy lies the belief that a solid foundation is essential for mastery. I start my students with the basics – proper hand positioning, finger strength exercises, and a focus on posture. These fundamentals are the building blocks that pave the way for a lifetime of musical growth. As we progress, I emphasize the importance of scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises to enhance dexterity and finger coordination. Central to classical piano training is the standard repertoire, which offers a rich tapestry of musical history and a diverse range of challenges. I carefully select pieces that are suitable for the student's skill level, ensuring a balance between familiarity and pushing their boundaries. We begin with simpler compositions from renowned composers like Bach, Mozart, and Clementi. These works not only refine technique but also introduce students to various musical styles. As we delve deeper, we explore the works of Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and other luminaries. Each piece presents unique technical and expressive challenges, allowing students to refine their skills and develop their musicality. I encourage them to analyze the historical context of the piece, understand the composer's intentions, and embrace the emotions embedded in the music. While adhering to the standard repertoire, I also believe in flexibility. I encourage my students to express their preferences and interests, allowing them to explore compositions beyond the classical repertoire. This not only keeps their enthusiasm alive but also nurtures creativity and a well-rounded musical perspective.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching philosophy revolves around a holistic approach to music education. While technical proficiency is important, I also emphasize the significance of musicality, interpretation, and understanding the composer's intentions. It's not just about playing the notes; it's about conveying emotions and telling a story through each piece. I encourage my students to explore various musical styles, experiment with their creativity, and develop their own unique musical voice. As a composer I am capable of writing and arranging, on the spot. Regular practice is the cornerstone of progress, and I guide my students in developing effective practice techniques. We focus on breaking down challenging passages, working on them in isolation, and gradually integrating them into the whole piece. I also teach the art of mindful practice, encouraging students to listen closely to their playing, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate incremental victories. Performance is a crucial aspect of piano playing, as it instills confidence and provides a platform for sharing one's musical journey. I organize recitals and encourage participation in competitions, as they offer opportunities to showcase growth and receive constructive feedback. These experiences help students conquer performance anxiety and connect with their audience on a deeper level. As a member of MTAC I promote the Certificate of Merit annual testing program, that I was a Branch Chairman of for 13 years, and actually completed through senior yr in high school myself as a student.

Michael P. is a brilliant educator that I would and have recommended to anyone who asks me for referrals to an amazing piano teacher. I myself am an elementary school music teacher as well as voice teacher and have been asked for referrals for piano teachers many times through the years. I always refer them to Michael. The students I have referred have stayed his students for many years and have grown to become amazing and competent musicians themselves. One parent I ran into a few years later thanked me and told me how happy he is, how it transformed his child to have more confidence and a wonderful skill to have and enjoy for life.

Michael P. is the best piano teacher I've ever had. Though I ended up pursuing classical voice rather than piano in the end, I am still grateful for all the lessons and influence Michael had on me when learning discipline, technique and in my opinion, most importantly, musicality. Having knowledge of the piano definitely made music theory in music school go more smoothly. One thing I can for certain say about Michael is that he is anything but boring. I've had my share of boring piano teachers throughout my childhood and it made me never want to practice because they never got me enthusiastic about piano. Michael was the opposite. He not only introduced classical works to me, but he also would transpose a song I was listening to at the time for example, into an easier key so I could play at my level. So I really appreciated that. The only reason I quit was so I could focus more on voice. But I cannot recommend Michael enough if piano is your passion.

When I first met Michael I was first impressed with how enthusiastic he was. My daughter liked him right away. I never had to argue with her about taking piano lessons because Michael made everything interesting and fun for her. His passion for music was evident and contagious.

Michael P, piano teacher, extraordinaire, taught our son for 6 years and our daughter for 4. He laid down their music foundation, taught them theory, discipline, exposed them to classical composers and kept them interested by asking what music they liked, were interested in, and expanded their repertoire. He spotlighted their talents in wonderful piano recitals, connected them to the Junior Bach Festival, and Certificate of Merit. Michael P is a talented musician, patient teacher, and a wonderful person to work with for many years. When we think of our son or daughter's musical accomplishments, we think of their piano beginnings with Michael P, whom we credit for starting them on that path.
