ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelor Degree: UCLA

Overview:
For as long as I can remember, music his been my passion. I began playing drums when I was six years old, and began performing around my hometown of Denver in rock bands at 13. Along the way, I also picked up guitar, allowing me to explore harmonic and melodic aspects of music that drumming didn't provide. In high school, I joined the drumline, where I worked intensely on my technique and speed, while simultaneously playing original music in bands around town. I moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to attend UCLA, where I studied Neuroscience, allowing me to learn in-depth about the human body, the mind, and how it learns. During my time there, I was also able to take a plethora of classes in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, learning skills such as recording, producing, engineering, and session musicianship from some of Los Angeles' most in-demand drummers, producers, and musicians. During my time at UCLA, I also worked at UCLA Radio, where I got to explore nearly every genre of music, meet many of LA's up and coming bands, and mix live in-studio performances, allowing me a front row seat to LA's underground music scene.
EXPERIENCE
My first experience teaching came during my time on the high school drumline. My school couldn't afford to fund faculty to lead the drumline, so during my junior and senior years, I took on the role of teaching new students, some of whom had never even held a drumstick, to be performance-ready in a short amount of time. When I moved to Los Angeles for school in 2013, I began teaching drum and guitar lessons in my free time, to fellow UCLA students at first, then expanding to the greater Los Angeles community, teaching students as young as six. I've watched my students build confidence, explore their favorite music and new styles in-depth, perform in front of large crowds, and fall in love with music in the same way that I have. Watching that journey, watching students fall more and more in love with music each lesson, is why I love teaching music.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who aren't quite sure what path they'd like to take in drumming, I like to start by teaching out of Joel Rothman's Basic Drumming, which will help build a solid foundation of the fundamentals that will be essential for being any style of drumming. But my ultimate goal is to let you guide your own journey, and we can focus on diving deeper into more advanced exercises, fine-tuning your technique, improving your pocket, time, and feel, learning to play your favorite songs and why the drums make them so good, composing your own parts, songs, or solos, and truly any aspects of your drumming you'd like to improve!
LESSON STYLE
I like to ensure that all of my students have rock-solid foundations, so basics like time, dynamics, and phrasing will be things I constantly return to. But once we have created a strong base to build on, I enjoy letting students work at their own pace that fits their goals. We'll focus on the styles of music that YOU want to play, and won't waste time working on things that aren't important to you. I love working hard with students who are extremely motivated, who practice a lot, and who want to move onto more advanced concepts and exercises each week, however I also love working with students who don't have a whole lot of time to practice and who simply want to use playing music as a way to wind down on the weekends. Regardless of your goals, it's my aim to be clear about what it looks like to get there and to ensure that you're having fun watching yourself grow.

I am a 20 year old female drummer who started taking lessons with Sanjay about two years ago. Within these past two years my drumming skills have improved exponentially. Not only has my speed and technique improved, but I have an air of confidence that I did not have before. Sanjay is truly the best drum teacher I've had because he explains things so patiently and clearly that I have no trouble understanding things that seem so confusing at first. He has the ability to hear things most people don't notice in music, and has taught me how to play cool polyrhythms, different time signatures, and how to count and read properly as well. He has definitely changed the way I play drums. He told me how to improve my posture and gave me nuanced tips on how to properly hold a stick which made a huge difference in how I play. I would highly recommend Sanjay to anyone whether they are just starting out or are looking to advance their drumming skills.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm.
