Perhaps the most beautiful thing about the teaching is sharing the knowledge with the students. Acquiring a new knowledge can be compared to making new big and small discoveries almost every day. It always has been rewarding and inspiring for me. (I believe its the most important part of my motivation). If the teacher has enough teaching skills, techniques, and personal charisma for showing the students how interesting, thrilling and inspiring every small discovery is, she/he is very happy teacher who can motivate the students well. I became passionate about teaching during my master's degree studies at New England Conservatory. I followed that passion through a doctoral degree in Music and Human Learning at UT Austin, and since have taught at universities, summer camps, and after-school programs. At the Stanford Jazz Workshop, I have been the Faculty Director and the Co-Director of the Mentor Fellowship Program, and I am the co-founder of CU Denver's LYNX Music Industry Camp. Read More

Up to this point I have taught mostly kids between the ages of 9 and 13. A lot of this experience was through the Community Education Program at Arapahoe Community College. I was hired there as a teacher the summer after I graduated from the school. The other students have been private instruction. I am a travelling instructor, meaning I teach at students houses and not in a studio. I am a diverse guitarist who is advanced on both the electric guitar and nylon string acoustic. Read More

I have taught Violin for eight years and it is one of the most rewarding aspects of my violin world. When Im not playing violin I enjoy playing golf, reading, hiking, and being at my familys lake cabin in northern Wisconsin. Read More

My method is definitively circumstantial to the student. If the student is hoping to perform casually, then we advance at a casual pace. If the student is hoping to perform competitively, we go much faster. Either way, I hope to transfer the art into a lens that grabs the student's heart and attention, since propelling the art - regardless of life circumstance - is my primary ambition. Read More

Naturally, my method will adapt to each student's needs. This will depend firstly on what style of music we are working to develop. Next, I will base my approach on the students level of abilities. There are a number of things to consider, such as technique, aural capacity, intuitive understanding, and basic theoretical knowledge, as well as each student's particular personality traits and best method of receiving information. I have a large repertoire of pedagogical literature and performance pieces. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice time should not be about clock-work rigidity but about creativity. Keep in mind that music is first and foremost for your own personal enjoyment. So, get creative by making your practice space comfortable and inspiring. Whatever is meaningful to you. Typically it is best to go down the list of things to do. Start with the warm-ups: scales, arpeggios. As guitarist or pianist it is important to get your hands moving. After the warm segue to study book and/or your chosen solo piece. But if you're feeling inspired right in the moment and want to jump into the solo, then don't waste it on scales! You can go back to that later.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
As parents, we are fairly in tuned to our child's needs, wants or aspirations. So, when you frequently see them playing an instrument of their own design, that is usually a pretty good indicator your child is ready for music lessons. Another sign is conversation. Does your child talk about playing an instrument not just in passing, but often? Does your child frequently ask to hear a particular song, genre, or an artist repeated over and over again? (like Taylor Swift, or do they love to hear Bach, which is true because I did) Do you catch a private moment and observe the child seeking out certain kinds of music to listen to? If so, these are just a few indicators that it may be time to cultivate that interest through music lessons
When will I start to see results?
Music is like learning a language. First, we learn nouns (notes), then verbs (scales and arpeggios), and soon we are learning full sentences (a melodic line) to reading a whole book (a solo piece or song). To the degree a student applies themselves to their practice time, is the degree by which you should start to see results by the following week after each lesson. Everyone is different. Everyone has a different level of talent--there's no shame in that. I have seen students with not much talent, yet their passion and drive to succeed made them better players than the most talented! Absolutely true! Because I make sure everyone goes at their own pace, results can be leaps and bounds or incremental. But one thing is certain: the student does come away with more "tools in their tool belt" than when they came in.
