For all of my students I start by allowing them to sit and feel the kit. Building a strong trusting relationship is important. I then proceed to dive into teaching simple 4/4 grooves to loosen the student up which processes into teaching basic rhythm studies and eventually the concepts of feel, groove, dynamics and of course timing. I started giving private drums instructions when I was 20 years old, few years before I decided to come to California in 1989 to attend the Musicians Institute where I graduated with Honnors mention in the Certificate. Its a great jumping off point to work on finger placement, rhythm and picking; all the while we get to learn a song, too! My intermediate students have focus heavily on musicianship. With these types of students I often play (or jam) with them during lessons. This gives them the chance to start really listening and to use their skills to function as a musician. For all students I typically teach from Musicians Institute’s curriculum. This curriculum is tailored in a clear and concise form to progress chronologically from the bottom up. The books I use can help to develop performance, reading, and technique etc at levels beginner through advanced. Most kids I try to teach with additional factors to keep lessons entertaining, and for adults I try to give them as much information as possible while catering to where they are trying to get as a drummer as opposed to the overall knowledge a kid needs.
