I am 19 years old, recently graduated, and attending Bakersfield College as a Registered Nursing Student. I first began playing the piano at age 3, and continue to play in private recitals, orchestras, music production for movie scores, and symphonies all across the central valley. Despite doing all of these things, my availability is still 100% open, as I have dedicated myself to helping others achieve the same passion for music that I have. Since I have been playing piano since a very young age, before I could even talk, I have accrued all certifications (from early beginner to advanced) that enable me the fortunate opportunity to teach. I am also advanced in various percussive instruments, such as Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, marching drums, drum set, and auxiliary.
I have been extremely passionate about playing, performing, and teaching the piano since before I was able to speak. At age 2, my grandmother allowed me to play on her grand piano, and up until her unfortunate death, she was my teacher. I became certified proficient in classical piano at age 4, and through a period of 5 years, achieved all remaining certifications up to, and including, advanced +. I began teaching at age 12, while simultaneously performing in adult symphonies, orchestras, and honor bands throughout the central valley; accruing various awards. While in high school, I also attended college seminars and courses that allowed me to graduate with a high school diploma and certifications in various musical courses recognized at a collegiate level (such as Music Appreciation). Now that I have graduated high school and settled down, I teach piano full-time, as it is my passion to enlighten kids/people to the possibilities of their own talent, and allowing them the same opportunities I was fortunate to receive myself.
With older students, I choose what books to start off with and why when I meet them, and understand their skill level. That way we create a productive environment that is really molded to their previous experience, if any, or their attitudes. I tend to begin younger students with Faber Piano Adventures, as that was what I was taught with too at a very young age. I have tried out various different piano books for children, but find that Piano Adventures, combined with tutoring on recognizing notes and reading music, is the most effective way to teach a child. Faber's Piano Adventures comes in levels as well, which focus on different things simultaneously that correlate with each other. For example, the first set of Piano Adventures comes with 4 books, Technique and Artistry, Performance, the Basic Lesson Book, and Theory. All the while, the book engages the children with bright colors, time to doodle and color, and cute illustration that is easy for them to grasp, despite not necessarily sounding easy.
I always implore my students and their parents to engage my lessons at their own pace, especially dependant on their lifestyle. I would never give a child more than I thought they or their parents could handle. I am a strong advocate for support in my lessons, contrary to the technique of some other classical teachers, who prefer to constructively criticize a students performance in order to accelerate the rate at which they are setting their standards. As children are all different, it is hard to really write down one specific teaching style, as I would mold my teaching style to fit the needs of your student. Whether your child is in school, developmentally challenged, or in special education, we will find something that will work for them.
