The methods that I choose to use with my students depends on what they want to learn. Some students want to just play classical music, some pop, some jazz, some marching band, etc. Therefore I do not use the same teaching methods for all students. With that being said, I do make certain that all of my srudents understand the basic elements of music, i.e., time and key signatures, note values, melody, rhythm, harmony, pitch, intonation (if a wind instrument), form, theme and variation, etc. Read More

With every skill comes discipline, devotion, and passion. I'll show my student the roots of drumming as well establish the influences that influenced our favorite musicians. I go over rudiments and applying them to the drum kit for all genres of music and grooves, stick control, technique, coordination/independence, drum fills, reading music and I also encourage my student play along with a tune of there choice or mine to get a feel for popular rhythms and tempos. I cannot stress enough the respect I have for each student's learning style and play, and I put a lot of effort into understanding each students individuality. We're not making fast food, here! That said, I have some basic books I've been working out of for years. For younger students I work with a couple things including the Alfred Drum Method and the Bastien books, as well as very simple ear training games and things like 5 finger scales. Read More

I have found that showing instead of telling comes across really well in teaching. I like to break things down and make sure a student isn't wasting time trying to get something new. I make them set reasonable goals in the moment till they feel like they can walk away having something new under their belt. To me one of the most important parts of showing a student something new is explaining why they should learn it or why they should do an assignment and how they can apply these things to real musical situations. I have an advanced level of experience in the following, Jazz, Chord Melody, Blues, Melodic Soloing, Harmony and Chord Theory, Ear Training, Fret Board understanding, and Songwriting. Most of this was honed while attending Musicians Institute. I was teaching on the side, but most of my time was spent writing, getting on stage, and growing within the industry. And that continues today. Today my living is built from teaching and working as a performing singer-songwriter throughout the city. Read More

I always try to make my classes fun and engaging. I manage a very particular teaching method based on how I have learned from my mentors. On the first class I ask what the student's interest is and what would make him/her happy to learn, how the student imagines playing and what styles of music are the favorites ones. If the student is beginner, I like to start teaching basic knowledge of instrument technique accompanied by easy rhythms so that the student feels motivated. Read More
