I recently completed my Master of Music degree as a full scholarship student, at the University of Southern California under the tutelage of Kathleen Winkler. Post graduation, I joined the Stockton Symphony as a member of the first violin section. A passionate orchestral musician, I've served as the concertmaster of both the Classical Symphony in Chicago and the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, and played under the baton of numerous influential conductors including James Conlon, Joseph Silverstein, Leonard Slatkin, and Carl St.Clair.   Prior to my move to California, I received both my Bachelor of Music, as well as my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Northwestern University, where I studied with world renowned pedagogues Almita and Roland Vamos. I am as committed to teaching as I am to performing, and have worked over 10 years with students of all ages. I currently hold a private studio of both violin and piano students. References are available upon request.

I began teaching piano in high school and continued into my college years. I then spent the next decade touring in bands and recording in some of the top studios in Los Angeles. I have worked with some of the best in the business including Rick Rubin, John Shanks, and Jason Falkner, just to name a few. These experiences have given me the knowledge of being a musician in the real world, which I try and impart to my students.

I adapt to everyone's needs individually, so depending on where the student enters, either as a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student, it will determine my approach. I am capable of teaching all ages and pretty much all styles of music. I do work with 2 or 3 method books and I only use them up to a point that is necessary. I like to move to traditional music when appropriate, and I try to always use the original scores so that the original keys are used. I like to build each year towards a performance such as a student recital and sometimes I even do a master classes.

I believe that playing the flute is a complex craft and an art form.  I want all of my students to become better musicians, better artists, and better thinkers as a result of their flute studies. For all students, but especially those aged 12 or younger, an open channel of communication between the teacher and parent is very important.  While some children are very independent, it is my experience that many require parental oversight to encourage good practice habits.  Every child is different, and I’m always happy to talk with a student's parent(s) in order to ensure that every student is progressing and enjoying their time learning the flute!

My philosophy is that the lessons should be personalised around the students needs and interests.  For voice, I work on vocal technique with my students, and on how to apply it to whatever style they like.  For piano, I like to work with the Alfred's piano books, gradually adding repertoire that matches their ability level, and can yet be fun. I have a few Faber and Alfred books for ideas of repertoire, but I also like to just let the student chose what songs they'd like to play, so that it's more interesting for the both of us!
