Overview:
My educational background includes a Single Subject Teaching Credential, and a Bachelor and Masters Degree in classical and jazz studies.  As an educator, I have produced outcomes of first place awards with superior ratings in instrumental music festival/competitions local and statewide. In 2003 I established Knights of Music Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization to provide music literacy after school to children attending public elementary schools that do not provide instrumental music as part of their curriculum.
EXPERIENCE
I have performed in several genres. I started performing in Community orchestras, Santa Monica Symphony and the Burbank Symphony. I have worked as a studio musician several major record companies in the area of flute performance, orchestrating and arranging music for various recording artist. My teaching experience in the Los Angeles Unified School District spans 16 years in instrumental music. I believe to successfully teach a subject matter, an instructor must not only have a thorough knowledge but a concise and clear path of instructions that lead to positive learning outcomes. It is important to be creative in implementing the different levels of cognition to help students effectively retain and use new information. My goals are to encourage innovation and creativity among all participating music students.
METHODS USED
I use several levels of method books that may encompass technical concepts (Moyse), orchestral studies (J. Donjon), Selected Duets, Solo works, Aebersold Jazz Studies and custom lesson plans that I create according to the performance level of the student. It is important to be creative in implementing the different levels of cognition to help students effectively retain and use new information. With regards to technical development I encourage all students to practice slowly for accuracy and muscle memory.
LESSON STYLE
It is important to find out initially how much students know in relation to what they need to know as a measurable objective and establish a set of criteria for success in order to determine if the objective has been achieved. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel students desire to progress and encourages them to learn more. My style is to be patient, encouraging and prepare a new approach for existing and consistent challenges. Student achievement has always been awarding and fulfilling for me in my efforts to teach.
