I began teaching at the Xavier University Junior School of Music (Louisiana) at the age of 18. My teaching experience now spans 30 years. While most of my teaching, over the years, has been primarily private, I also have several years of classroom teaching experience. I enjoy teaching music because I believe that it is one of the most endearing methods of sharing information. One of my motto's is that I am an educator first, music is simply the vehicle by which I choose to educate. It brings me pure joy when I share information with a student, whether it be music realated or not, and see that light in their eyes shine because they have received something meaningful, that may make a difference in their lives.

I believe it is important to build a strong technical foundation and knowledge of the mechanics of the voice, while also focusing on performance and real-world musicianship. With contemporary music theory (beginning to advanced) integrated into each lesson, students learn to understand and apply a musical vocabulary that is necessary to communicate in the industry. As a vocalist myself, I think too often singers have trouble communicating with their bands in a rehearsal setting or with producers and engineers in a recording setting; therefor I see the benefit in students being able to identify the grooves and "feels" of their selected pieces as well as being able to count-in a band. I also believe that being able to perform live is crucial, especially in today's festival age where people are (thankfully) demanding more and more live music. But most of all I want my students to be inspired-- to leave a lesson and go home and keep singing because they just want to continue exploring and learning.

I combine the elements of studying classical guitar, via the excellent Frederick Noad book, with playing modern pop, rock, country or blues songs. This gives the student a solid foundation and great technique to do anything and everything they want with the guitar, as well as keep it fun and entertaining.

Combine equal parts listening, observing, evaluating, communicating, and demonstrating. Season with patience, encouragement, and a dash of empathy. Let simmer. Serve with enthusiasm and praise!

I have been teaching for 7 years and under those years I have taught first timers and more advanced players and helped players get better at drums. I first started teaching friends kids and it grew from there and more people asked for lessons and I made more time for it and really feel in love with teaching. After this time teaching I feel I have a better grasp of what tools a student needs to get better at drums and how to get straight to the problem and fix them.
