I am a composer who plays several instruments, and my primary instrument is piano. From 2010 to 2012, I was a full-time,self-employed piano tutor serving the Paris, TX area, with several loyal clients. What makes me stand out as an educator are two things: 1. My strong personal conviction that anything may be taught to anyone, provided that there is a willingness to learn, and that the educator is able to effectively break down the given subject into its logical components, and 2. Instruments: Flute
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my solo debut performance with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra this past year. I entered their annual concerto competition after I had spent countless hours practicing and preparing the Renaissance Concerto by Lukas Foss, only to make finals but not advance further in my undergraduate concerto competition. I had absolute faith in all of the hard work I put into this piece, and I knew that if I just had one more chance to play it that I could win. I ended up winning first place in the New Albany Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and I was invited to perform the fourth movement of this concerto with the orchestra a few months later. It was the greatest musical experience of my life, and the first time that I gave a performance in front of a lot of people and felt truly proud of myself and all of the work I had put into it afterward.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose the flute because my cousin began playing it when she was in fourth grade, and every time I would go over to her house I would see it and ask if I could play it. Eventually she gave up on the flute, but I fell in love with it and knew that I had to play this instrument. When it came time for me to decide on an instrument during our fifth grade instrument fittings, I was told that I should play the french horn because I could make a good sound out of it and they needed more french horn players in the band. I refused incessantly because I knew that I was meant to play the flute and I loved it, and my cousin offered to give me her flute if I were to decide to play it. I entered every single band opportunity available to me in middle school and high school, and I could not imagine my life without the flute.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My private flute teacher in high school inspired me to go into music! She saw potential in me right away and asked me very early on if I had put any thought into pursuing music as a major in college. I was a sophomore in high school, and I told her that I really couldn't see myself being happy if I were to pursue any other career path. She helped me find various competitions that I could enter and summer programs to audition for, and she inspired me to realize that I really had what it takes to be a musician. Her faith in my ability gave me the confidence to give it my all and be accepted into 4 out of 5 of the music schools that I auditioned for during my senior year of high school.
