I have been a musician almost my whole life, starting out as a singer in a children's church choir when I was five. I started playing cello in the fourth grade through the public school system in California. I am classically trained, but I love all different styles of music. Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
While there are no other musicians in my family, I am fortunate to have family who are very supportive of my musical goals and very appreciative of all different types of genres of music.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I love to sing jazz standards! I love how many versions of the same song that exist, that really shows the versatility in this genre. I also love how so much emotion can be portrayed while singing many jazz songs.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I was inspired to complete my Master's Degree in Musicology because I enjoy the learning about the social and cultural impact that music has on our world.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would be thrilled to perform a musical on tour or on Broadway. I particularly love high-energy pop-rock/contemporary musicals that have a lot of acting and excitement.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I would be a public speaker or a college professor. I have a deep passion for interacting with others as well as a penchant for learning new things and fostering learning among others.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
The hardest thing to master is actually something that is fundamentally very easy--finding YOUR OWN unique sound! With the myriad of different music that we all have available to us at any given time, it can be easy for many singers, both novice and experienced) to try to adhere to what they think is the "right" way to look, sound, or present while onstage. Finding one's own vocal performance originality can be difficult thing to master.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
For me, a normal practice session consists of a large bottle of water, a quiet space, and one or two attainable goals to accomplish in that session. I start with a few gentle warm-ups, and then continue on to practice the song/concept for about an hour at a time.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I am emotionally drawn to the power of the human voice. Singing is exceptionally unique in that our instrument that we use for singing is totally unique and no two voices are the same.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my own vocal improvement over the years in my own career. Not only has my vocal technique improved with continuous and dedicated practice and training, but I have grown exponentially as an onstage persona and a dynamic performer.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
The vocal coach I used to learn from is an incredibly talented singer and musician. I was inspired by how she was able to use her voice teaching skill to guide others, but how she was able to earn a living using her passion for singing and playing the piano. That was always very empowering to me!
When will I start to see results?
If you are taking one lesson per week and clocking at leave 30 minutes of practice 3 times a week, you will see significant results and improvement.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is showing a strong interest in singing lessons and they have expressed a desire to learn further for a particular activity (i.e. the school musical) that is a good sign.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Set goals beforehand- every time you go to practice! This will ensure that you are using your time wisely and keep you on track with your goals.
