Overview:
Music has always been deeply involved in my life. I have played music since first grade, starting out on the piano. after dabbling with violin and other instruments, I gradually moved toward my current primary instrument. The drum set has revolutionized my understanding and love for this outstanding art form. I began playing in school bands all the way up through high school. Studying with great musicians such as Dan Robbins and Howard Stephens developed the beginning of my musicality with the drums. After high school, I was involved with an all original indie pop band from southern California called The Grinns, where I recorded and toured playing shows all over California for a year and a half. After leaving, I have focused entirely on mastering and becoming technically proficient at the drum set. Studying jazz drums for the past two years under the supervision of Paul Johnson and Joey Sellers.
EXPERIENCE
I am relatively new at giving full time lessons, I have reached the turning point in where I feel overwhelmingly confident that I can provide complete instruction to any non professional musician. I have given lessons in the past, but I have grown immensely in regards to my being able to convey musical knowledge accurately. I am very comfortable working with students of any age group or playing level. Genre is not an issue either. I would love to hear what you and your kids listen to, and get them playing along with it!
METHODS USED
For new students that are beginners, I find out what music they like and what made them gravitate towards the drums. This knowledge is vital, for it is the opening for what I can do to get the student to develop a true attachment and love for playing drums. I have seen many young musicians get overwhelmed and grow a detest for starting music lessons with an instructor that gives the student a formula for playing drums that is the opposite of what they actually desire to play. What young musicians desire to play may change, but to be confident and proficient in the styles that the student actually WANTS to play sets a strong foundation for versatility and texture later in their drumming career.
LESSON STYLE
There is not a one-size fits all teaching method for beginners, or any playing level for that matter. Every student had different goals for what they want to play or what they want out of music in general. Bombarding a new student with drum rudiments and prescribed drum patterns (unless it is what they desire) can be very daunting and could lead a student to dislike drums or any instrument. I take the pace of what makes each student comfortable, interested and most importantly eager to learn more!
