I have been teaching since 1984 and now I teach from my home studio. I am not trying to make my students the best in the world but I want them to love music. My students have accomplished many goals. They have all had the chance to perform in recitals. Some have won scholarships to private schools and colleges, gotten to perform at Disney World to record music for a movie soundtrack and have won top music awards from their high school graduations. My private teaching experience dates back to my late high school years and after I graduated from college I began to teach professionally and I also include a wider range of instrumentations. I specialized in woodwinds and I can also teach novice piano and brass instruments as well. In my seven years of teaching experiences, I had helped many students with their auditions and musical growth. Some of them made All-State and/or junior All-State, many students made into All-County bands. Read More

I like to find out why my students are interested in playing music. This helps me to create a lesson plan for each individual one. I like to start out teaching using Alfred's beginner books, and progress from there. Each student learns at a different pace, so I base my lessons off of their progress. I have found that doing this helps keep the student motivated and encouraged in the process of learning their given instrument. Read More

When first starting with a student, I gage what their level of music is and go from there. With all my students regardless, we start off with Hanon exercises and scales. These are the fundamentals of piano. Music theory will also be applied as needed to help students learn music appropriately and efficiently. With beginners, we start with the John Thompson Piano Books so that students are getting the well rounded ins and outs of the piano. Read More

I have been working with children since I began working with Bar-T Summer Camps in 2007 at age 13. In my second year at Berklee College of Music, I decided to pursue music education. I have always been fascinated in music instruction. I have taught ages 5-18 in many different music fields like composition, arranging, performance, composition and theory. My main instrument is the Alto Saxophone and I have enjoyed playing the instrument on many stages and other performance areas. Read More

Instruments: Guitar Voice Electric Guitar Acoustic Guitar

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I play drums because I love rhythm.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes, my beautiful 83 year old grandmother loves to dance!

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I knew it was what I wanted to do because of how good I feel when I see my students succeed at meeting their goals to learn voice or guitar.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I would be a vet because I love animals;-)

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I love to play Gospel, Blues, Rock & Reggae. The rhythms and melodies are unique, captivating and powerful. And these are fun to play as well as musical theatre, I love singing in musical theatre.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I am in the process of obtaining a 2nd degree in Jazz Vocal Performance.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
My methods will be based on the students progress. It's better to meet the student where they are on their journey than to push them ahead of their own self development. I aim to nurture and encourage as well as inspire my students to grow and develop their craft and creativity.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Focusing on what you need to learn, each element of the instrument in order to master the craft. 20 minutes of practice to 30 minutes each day, focusing on a single thing until you can comfortably move on to the next item.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
For guitar, I think pinch harmonics is very difficult to master (not impossible), but it will take much practice. And for vocals, I believe whistle notes can be difficult to master. I can sing whistle notes, but it takes practice and dedication to have that muscle memory to consistently deliver.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am a praise leader in my church, I have a professional band and I am constantly learning as should all musicians/singers, and I'm proud of all of my accomplishments. A few years ago, I got the lead role as the Scarecrow in a children's production of The Wizard of Oz in an off Broadway theatre in NYC. It was a great show, musical theatre at it's best.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, his name is Mr. Manor. He inspired me be helping me to believe in myself, my talent and my own unique creativity.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I love the to sing (Voice) and I love the sound and range of the guitar.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child expresses interest in music, vocal, guitar, they are ready to start learning.

When will I start to see results?
You will start to see results after about a week or 2 depending on the student's ability to practice and help in the development of their talent.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It is very important to practice at least 3-5 days a week. At least 30 minutes a day should be dedicated to focused practice so that you can develop the talent you are learning, and memorize the skills needed to succeed. Practice is an effective way to get better at your craft.
