My beginnings as a teacher go back to my undergrad in Puerto Rico where I would teach in a music academy with students from ages 10-17. As my academic life expanded I moved to Florida where I was the Teacher Assistant for my Masters degree for 2 years. There I taught college level students from all ages in classical music. In my Doctorate I also had the opportunity to be Teacher assistant for 2 years for Master students and undergrad where my focus was jazz, blues, pop and all sorts of commercial music. Read More

My methods vary between each student. For beginning students, that are not learning in a school setting, I typlically start with Hal Lenard's Essential Elements For Band. Once the student had progressed, I will start to introduce solo repetoire that the student will be instested in, which could be pop tunes or other type of music. This will encourage the student's passion for music to grow. If the student is in a school setting, then the student will work on all of the music for school and solo repetoire. Read More

I have been teaching privately for over ten years. I have taught all levels and ages over the years, including a few adults. During my five years at Play On Philly, an after school music program, I taught small group flute lessons and coached/arranged music for small chamber groups. I have also worked for Symphony in C Youth Orchestra, coaching weekly sectionals and playing in the orchestra with students. Read More

I began my music teaching experience as a public school music educator before moving onto college and university level. Throughout all my years of teaching, I have always had a private music studio. My breadth of experience as a performer, lecturer, author and administrator has translated into a teacher with a high level of musicality and sensitivity. I have been trained in relating to and instructing students of all ages, as well as students with different levels of musical achievement. Read More

I am a passionate and patient instructor who loves to help students find joy in making music. I believe that developing a methodical way of practicing and thinking about music reading, tone production, and creating rhythm is the key to unlocking students' abilities to enjoy the music they produce. In 2008 I graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. During my ungraduate years I studied classical saxophone with Dale Underwood and was selected as a soloist with the university's concert band on two occassions. Read More

My lessons are very structured in style and format. Scales, exercises and method books will be the basis of every lesson. With intermittent lessons on musical theory along the way, the student will begin their technical foundation. Regardless of whatever genre of music the student's interests may lie, I provide the technical instruction to make it possible. As time goes on, I then allow students to pick their own music for us to work in class. Read More

Nothing makes me happier than being able to teach my students and help them learn or enhance their ability to perform flute and understand the music they are sharing with others. I enjoy helping my students achieve more and continuously inspire them to become better musicians. Through regular practice and mentorship, I teach them to became independent and confident performers. My goal has always been to be a facilitator of my students' journeys to success and hopefully to encourage them to fall in love with the flute just like I did at a very young age. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I always just identified as a musician so there was question that I would go into this as a profession. The part that was confusing was choosing what my major would be and then realizing that my college degree doesn't necessarily define what I'd do in my musical career. I actually quit flute playing for about 2 years after I left grad school (although I was still teaching music classes and repair woodwinds), and had a random opportunity to get back into performing in 2017.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Nope! I have 4 siblings and just 2 of us happen to be professional musicians. No one in our extended family really plays instruments and our parents think sheet music is totally foreign. My sister who's a professional jazz musician teaches at a university, freelances, and writes music for her jazz combos. We are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
All of my students have this basic practice setup:
o warm up on long tones
o fundamental exercises
o scales and arpeggios
o etude
o focus piece
I have detailed practice techniques to use with these basic practice elements depending on what needs to be improved for the week
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Quality over quantity. 30 minutes of focused, accurate practice with a metronome will always be more effective than 2 hours unorganized practice. Come up with a routine and you'll be surprised how quickly you're able to learn!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child shows an interest in their instrument without it feeling forced, they're able to focus on one task for 30 minutes, and begin to ask detailed questions about their instrument, they're ready to start lessons. I personally recommend that if your child is starting beginning band, allow them to get used to the musical setting before beginning intensive 1-on-1 studies.
When will I start to see results?
This part is up to you. I focus on immediate results by providing efficient and proved practice techniques. It takes some discipline to practice the way I teach you, but you will see better results if you trust the process.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
One of my first students I've ever taught has gone on to become a Haynes artist, win international awards, and now studies at Harvard University and a prominent conservatory. She continues flute studies while she also pursues a different profession, and this is what I love to see! Of course, this is a text book success story, but no matter if your flute playing leads you to an Ivy League school or to the living room performing for your loved ones, success is based on the student and what makes them fulfilled.
