I have my students spend a great deal of time on rhythmic accuracy, scales, and sight-reading. I create my own lesson plans and provide students with a variety of instructional materials. Students begin each lesson with rhythmic drills and scales with gradual increases in difficulty levels. I prefer using Rubank method books and the Klose Complete Method for the clarinet. Students are always free to bring in music from their school band program and/or solos and etudes of their choice. Read More

My methods are different for every student, but I always start with fundamentals. This includes scales, exercises to improve sound and intonation, reading, writing, improvisation, and most importantly listening. Depending on the path the student choses, some areas will be focused on more than others. I will often introduce more advanced concepts early if the student displays interest in them. I am not the kind of instructor who will say "play your etudes first and then we can talk about improvisation." I started tutoring students on the flute at a very young age and have done it off and on since then. I like to play with students and encourage performances and help with competitions. When I was in school, I competed in solo and ensemble competitions and also performed in All-State Band and other honor bands. I have performed with concert bands, orchestras, ensembles, and marching bands. I love all kinds of music and find a lot of satisfaction in helping students understand the beauty of the flute. I have taught a wide range of insturments ranging from woodwinds like clarinet and flute to brass insturments like trumpet and baritone.
