As an instructor, my job is to give the student every opportunity possible to discover their passion for music. The first lesson is always about providing a safe relaxed tone and finding out where that student's progress is. Not establishing an accurate assessment of their progress can be very destructive because it could cause me to come off as either too demanding or condescending. Depending on what their level is, I will design a custom curriculum to bring their weaknesses to the same level as their strengths. Read More

My teaching style is based on an open system, which allows the student to express their ideas and concerns about the topics covered in each lesson, in order to build the educational strategy that can best benefit the student. As an professor, the educational development of each student will always be a priority, but as a musician I recognize that there are activities that can facilitate this work, such as collaborations between different students to perform chamber music, collaborations between the student and the teacher to play musical duos during lessons, among other activities that keep the student interested and curious at all times. I had an opportunity to start teaching early as a student leader in my high school music program and continuing into college. I've found that my students have a much higher level of success when they are encouraged to practice regularly at home. I use classical repertoire to build techniques across styles and modern music to keep students engaged. If they aren't enjoying themselves, I'm not doing something correctly. I encourage students to enter recitals and competitions as well as create their own original material. Read More

I don't believe in just one way, each student is different! For beginners, often the struggle is getting a good sound out of the flute and learning fingering and how to read music all at the same time. I like to take it step-by-step with reasonable goals. As students progress, we start to incorporate more and more into the repertoire while focusing on fundamentals and sound. But, I like to keep it fun along the way by playing along with my students, bringing in duet music and listening to the greats like Galway. Read More
