Currently, I'm helping a local church playing piano and drums (when they're short a drummer), and I'm the lead singer for a band called Just A Theory. Having been a part of this band has been really cool because we've used this group as a platform to help the homeless, by having our fans bring food and clothing to our shows. It's been very nice to see people willing to do what they can to help those who are in need. Read More

As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music. My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. I really emphasize getting students to read music and also understand the key components of music theory, so that they understand what it is they are playing. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with CAGED System. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance looking into different genres such as RnB, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. 5 minutes of warm up, 25 of theory, 20 of repertoire and 5 of talking about the next class. By nature of being a performing musician at a various churches, I have had contact with many youths over the years that are eager to learn music in order to join the worship band. I have a private studio that allows me to teach students individually on a set of live drums and bass guitar. I am well versed with individual, private lessons, in addition to group or paired lessons that can instead focus on theory, concepts, and interpersonal musicianship. Read More

This happens differently for everyone. I believe the most important aspect in teaching music is to communicate universal concepts with language that suits the individual. From a playing standpoint, i think it is important that each student is studying what they find interesting in order to keep them excited and looking forward to lessons and practice. I do my best to cater to the individual and nurture their growing interest in music Read More
