I have been teaching drums and playing gigs since 1993. I've taught close to 20,000 drum lessons to hundreds of students. I've played on national tv, toured with several signed bands, endorsed drum and cymbal companies, and have been featured in video games. My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. For beginning students who are young, I usually start with just a snare drum. Learning stick holding and striking technique, and then move onto adding pieces of the drumset to play on. From there, I go onto introducing learning note values, and drum music reading. For adults, I may start the same way, but also discuss what they would like to focus on.
