I have been teaching since 2012 while still in school. Once entering Berklee College of Music I started to work as part of the Vocal and Piano Departments to help incoming students with learning how to write charts and play with a band. I have taught internationally in places such as China and Vietnam and created full curriculum for International camps around Vietnam. I am currently teaching a few remote students and have taught ensemble classes and VQT Music Academy in Garden Grove, California Read More

I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who is interested in working with students who share my love of music. I recently graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Commercial Drumset and Percussion Performance. I enjoy performing and have been fortunate in being able to perform at places including Washington D.C. for government officials, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee and various locations around the Southern California Area. I always try to make my classes fun and engaging. I manage a very particular teaching method based on how I have learned from my mentors. On the first class I ask what the student's interest is and what would make him/her happy to learn, how the student imagines playing and what styles of music are the favorites ones. If the student is beginner, I like to start teaching basic knowledge of instrument technique accompanied by easy rhythms so that the student feels motivated. Read More

After I first received my Bachelor's Degree from CSU Fullerton, I opted to showcase my original music through distinct outlets. One of the resulting projects, themattsmithneujazztrio, has recorded three full-length records; my other project, JUICEBOX, has recorded two. I gained a masters of music in jazz drum set from California Institute of the Arts, where I was honored to record my own composition for the CalArts, 30th Annual Jazz CD at Capitol Records. Read More

I always start my lessons with the basics. You have to learn the rudiments. We start with a book called stick control and move on to syncopation and more. We learn to hold the sticks the right way so you can play any technique later on. We concentrate on control and sounding clean. We move on to drum beats and fills . Eventually we learn syncopation with hands and feet. We learn dynamics and reading music..... Read More
