Additionally, some other books that I use with my drum set students are Syncopation by Ted Reed, The Art of Bop by John Riley, The Essence of Afro-Cuban Percussion, and The Essence of Brazillian Percussion by Ed Uribe. For more advanced students, I work on trancriptions of their favorite drummers, chart reading by playing with recordings or live musicians, improvisation over musical forms, and developing indivdual exercises for each student. When teaching beginners, especially kids, I find it easiest to have them learn songs that they already enjoy. This often involves learning the chords within the songs and allows us to start focusing on a strum pattern as well. If this seems daunting, sometimes we learn only the abridged or quick version of a song. I always like to start entry level students with the intro to "Come As You Are" by Nirvana. Read More

I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. I am not following any style of system, other than the best of what I have picked up myself, along the way. And I have explored many different systems of drumming, both theoretically and practically, in professional situations. I usually don't refer to any specific published drum books and use my own photo copied exercises and material I have collected over the years. I will normally find just the right exercise and pass it on to my students and spend some time with them working it out. Read More

Learning the drums should be a fun and rewarding experience! I believe that learning to play different styles, playing along with a metronome/song and being able to read music are essential for all drummers. I ask students what style of music/bands they like and incorporate this into lessons. I break the lessons down into 3 sections: The first is where we warm up and play rudiments and technique exercises. Read More

I believe in getting the student interested in the concepts and styles themselves, i like to introduce them to different ways of playing and my main method is to show them how it can be exciting to play/learn. For eg, for someone who loves games, I would show them how to play chords and melody ( on a piano ) at the same time by using the Minecraft theme song as an example, or any game that they might know and enjoy so it gets them interested to want to play and learn, through that i will show them dfferent techniques and concepts, this way they are already enjoying what they are learning and at no point will not want to practice it on their own.
