For piano I use a combination of the Bastien books, if you are a beginner. For more intermediate or advanced I use whatever music the student is interested in. It could be the Great American Songbook or classical music. For percussion, for beginners I use the Garwood Whaley book, Fundamentals for the Snare Drum. For drum set I use the Syncopation Book by Ted Reed and a variety of other books depending on the need. Read More

When I receive a new student the first thing I do is assess where they are technically and what their interests are. From there I develop custom lesson plans that are design to improve a certain technique while learning new music. For example if a student comes in and really loves Michael Jackson's music but doesn't know how to hold the drumsticks or read music, I will give them basic exercises to improve their lack of technical ability and then we'll apply it to a song. I believe that drum has to start with the basics, I used to practice at least one hour a day every day for over 10 years. I still practice on a regular basis with my pads and on my drums. So many drummers you see today are not schooled and its a shame. if you start with a good solid foundation you can be the best there is. I always strived to be the best drummer that I can be.Learning can be fun if taught the right way. Read More

I teach from a feel and improvisation stand point. I do start with basic rhythm studies but I love to allow for my students to explore the kit and their own comfort levels. It creates what I feel to be a sense of intimacy between them and the instrument. I believe that feeling comfortable with your instructor and your instrument harbor a much more positive and motivational learning impact on the student. Read More

My main focus of teaching is on the student, and on developing and expanding their existing musical interests. I develop a lesson plan and schedule that begins with the musical interests and passions of the student, their favorite bands, favorite songs and musical styles. From there I take each of their favorite pieces of music and demonstrate how the building blocks of music were used to create each, and how they can not only recreate their favorites, but start to create their own musical identity. For any level I like to check to see if they have a solid enough grasp on fundamentals. For drum kit users I like to only have the kick drum, snare and hi-hat available. If its a more experienced player, I like to have them play a simple groove just to see where they are and tailor how I teach them to most benefit where they would like to go in their journey.
