I have a method in place, but my lessons often take sudden detours when we need to work on a specific task (i.e. preparing for school band auditions) at the students request. Through my encouragement, my students play gigs, talent shows, in their school concerts, etc. Some are now professional drum teachers. I have played with high school bands at Carnegie Hall in New York and traveled to many places because of music. When I went off to graduate school my long time band mate went on the road as a professional musician. But I never stopped playing. I have a few years teaching experience and I am always excited to begin working with young students who are interested in becoming musicians themselves. I focus a lot on the technical aspects of musicianship because I believe everyone has their own feeling that they bring to music and I want to give my students the tools to be able to express themselves in their own musical way. Practice is definitely important in order for students to get familiar with the instrument and different styles and I also believe that learning different styles of music tends to help students to get better at the ones they like to play. Teaching the most basic concepts in how to build a chord or a scale by using formulas is my favorite way to approach the lesson. An individual's understanding of music is always changing therefore I feel it is better to change with them. Using methods which are proven is important, but the idea of improvisation during a lesson always keeps the interest for me and the student.
