In 2006, I accepted a position with The Van-Dells and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. After returning in 2007, having received my Journeyman and Professional certificates in percussion, I was hired on in 2007 as a classroom drummer, teaching assistant, and LPW (Live Playing Workshop) instructor, all the while playing gigs with local bands and working doing recording sessions. For all of my students I start by allowing them to sit and feel the kit. Building a strong trusting relationship is important. I then proceed to dive into teaching simple 4/4 grooves to loosen the student up which processes into teaching basic rhythm studies and eventually the concepts of feel, groove, dynamics and of course timing. For older students, I integrate a more disciplined routine and, as earlier mentioned, allow their goals and intrests to inform the lesson plan, writing out excercises personally.  Generally the first third of the lesson is spent on fundamentals and warm up, the middle on the material we are working on, and something fun and/or new at the end (kind of like the scrimmage at the end of soccer practice). We learn to hold the sticks the right way so you can play any technique later on. We concentrate on control and sounding clean. We move on to drum beats and fills .
