My methods are the ones that works more for the student. For some reason some methods work better with certain people. One method can be tedious for a student and easy and fun for another. Hal Leonard's can be a good tool. I can use to many different books. Also I can write down specific exercises special for the student. Some times a student can learn faster without a book. Read More

My teaching style differs from student to student. With the younger students, it's all about fun. The goal is to make playing music less of a chore, and instead, have it be something they enjoy just as much as playing video games or soccer. For the adult students, and students interested in playing music professionally, I tend to give them more material at a much quick rate. Read More

Every student is different so my teaching style changes depending their personality and interests. Some students respond well to tough challenges and criticism, while others buckle under pressure. For each student I will find a balance between their musical interests and information that I think they need to know in order to become a better percussionist. In lessons, I maintain complete honesty with my students about their progress, but in a reassuring way to watch them grow as performers. Read More

I am a people person. During my time as a Finance professional I worked with many different types of people and it was my job to help them learn and understand and how certain " market " forces work as it pertains to their life and their goals. I look at teaching music in the same way. Everyone has their own idea of what they want to do with music and where they want to go. Read More

I started teaching right after graduating from Berklee at a school where I actually took lessons during my high school years! It was such a special experience and it made be fall in love with helping people achieve their musical goals and dreams, regardless of how big or small they are. There are few things more special than when a student wants to learn a song and we work on it, lesson after lesson, in as much detail as possible and when they finally get it... that look in their eyes is priceless! Attempting to learn an instrument is difficult, and doing so in the presence of an already experienced musician can be intimidating and even discouraging. I am well aware of this fact and make ample effort to make my students comfortable, and to own their music as their own. Each student I teach knows that they are not to simply become a copy of me- instead, their goal is to become their own unique creator that is unlike anyone else. Read More

I primarily use original material when I teach, but occasionally Ill work from standard method books such as Stick Control, Master Studies, and Syncopation, or assign pages from more recent books like John Rileys The Art of Bop Drumming. Ill also pull out books specifically for sight reading such as Anthony Cirones Portraits in Rhythm. For beginning and intermediate students I focus on fundamental technique, basic sight reading skills, and drum set playing (independence/coordination of the limbs, relaxation and balance, time and groove, fills and solos, introduction of musical styles, etc.) For advanced students I get into more conceptual and creative aspects of playing the drums, but I also introduce the Spivack/Wilson technique which I learned during my studies with Murray Spivack and Richard Wilson in the 1980s [check out the 4-part series featured in Modern Drummer magazine in 2011-2012].
