For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. There are two essential parts to learning/improving you ability on an instrument; Instruction and Practice. I will provide instruction, but in order for the student to show improvement they need to practice. When learning any instrument or even for that matter, singing, developing muscle memory is the key. That requires repetition to get the brain to register the process.
