Absolutely the most important thing that happens for me in a private lesson is to see a development in a student's personal relationship with music. Through having students record personal goals at each lesson I have seen how fast students can learn to meet and in many cases exceed these goals. I know from experience how good it feels to work hard at a musical goal that I accomplish and it is not only my joy as a teacher but an important focus of mine to celebrate those successes with my students. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I truly believe that all learning, while serious in nature, should be fun and exciting in methodology. Living in the age of technology, there are so many ways to make learning fun and interesting for students. Whether it be sharing information from Youtube, educational sites such as The Teaching Channel, using digital music apps such as "Smart Music" for assessment, showing a student how to record themselves on their smartphones, all of these things can be brought in to the instructional experience. I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More

As a Jazz Studies major at Cal State Northridge (CSUN), I placed in the college's Jazz "A" Band, which won 1st Place in its division at the Next Generation Monterery Jazz Festival. During my time at CSUN, I also began to write and record music for jazz big band. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I began playing my own songs and compositions at live music venues and was often hired to play on live television series. Read More

Each student is unique and requires a customized approach to realize their goals. I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach to students where they all play the same exercises, etudes, etc. I help students find what works for them, often times we create our own methods or modify existing ones to suit the needs of the pupil. I believe a solid foundation in the fundamentals of music can be very helpful, familiarity with music theory/terminology/notation. Read More

I received my Bachelor's in Jazz Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2006. Since then I performed with Who's Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, and my own hip-hop/soul band The Urban Sophisticates. I've worked with Ellis Marsalis, Talib Kweli, Arrested Development, Byron Stripling, Fred Wesley, Delfeayo Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Jimmy Cobb, and Robin Eubanks. I have performed on four continents, and on cruise ships world wide with numerous different ensembles. Read More
