I've played trombone for eleven years and have stuck with it for love of the instrument. I attended the LA County High School for the Art for three years, through which time I became serious about learning music. I went on to earn the Bob Cole Conservatory Scholarship at CalState Long Beach. My favorite courses were Brass Chamber Music and my various music history courses. I began teaching private music lessons in college in 2003. I have been teaching lessons consistently for the last 10 years from my home studio, online, as well as traveling to the students' home. I find great pleasure in hearing a student's progress, that's why I encourage recording their practice and having a consistent practice schedule. I feel it is important to give positive reinforcement and feedback to students. Through having students record personal goals at each lesson I have seen how fast students can learn to meet and in many cases exceed these goals. For beginning trombone students, I start by introducing the student to the basics: the mouthpiece by itself. Getting comfortable with producing clear, sustatined tones through the mouthpiece is the key to producing smooth, gorgeous melodies on the whole trombone. I start the first 10-15 minutes of every lesson just on the mouthpiece, and then have the student play unmeasured sustained notes (called "long tones"), exploring the range of the instrument.
