My teaching method books involve All for Strings and Suzuki books. Suzuki books are categorized from level 1-10, level 8-10 is the equivalent of college level repertoire. I currently have students on level 1-8. In addition, I also look for individual method books and outside repertoire of Suzuki once the student is ready to move at a faster pace or in need of additional help. I always make sure my students and their parents have realistic expectations when they start taking music lessons. For instance, violin is a difficult instrument to play and it can take months of practice to play a simple tune. However, it can be fun and enjoyable as long as it is understood that these simple accomplishments in playing the violin are in fact rather big ones. I have taught private lessons, part time for over 15 years. The instruments I teach are the piano and violin. I find that students progress more with regular short intervals of daily practice. I like to make the music fun with songs that children like and then have other books with the basics. For adults I like to start with folk songs, classical music, and showtunes. Firstly, I think building a good rapport with my students is important in establishing a comfort level that is conducive to learning. I've found that students(especially children) are more engaged, ask more questions, and have more fun in the lesson if the teacher makes an effort to connect with his or her student. Classes are customized per the student's individual needs. For some students, this means a standard repertoire: Schradiek, Scevcik, Hrimaly for violin. Hanon for piano. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals. (Basic interval training will be a part of everyone's lesson, as there's really no way around that.)
