I try to make sure students can progress at their own pace based on their own skill level and experience with the instrument. I try to instill diligence patience and not being too hard on yourself as the top priorities. I want student and teacher interactions to be casual enjoyable and fun but at the same time serious with regards to the composer's intentions in the music. I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. Read More

I have studied music since childhood and continued with two professional degrees in music. My first degree is in Vocal Performance my second is in Music Education. I have been a part of a collegiate piano studio throughout my undergraduate degree. I have been playing classical guitar since childhood, but didn't study it in a collegiate setting. I started working with youth as a counselor when I was 15 years old, which soon transitioned to helping students in my high school band integrate concepts and theory that seem at first like a foreign language. During college, as a student majoring in Chinese, I continued to teach guitar lessons during my stays in China. My work as a tutor continued through my A.A. at Laney College, and through this experience I have fine tuned my perception of my student's strengths and and areas of need. Read More

I am very positive about teaching my students. I have the knowledge to teach about the theory, technique and flow of the music up through the intermediate level. I don't necessarily stay with the music until it is perfect, because as the student learns more they can always come back to it and play it better. I do encourage my students to perform pieces they are doing well with, it's always fun to play for a small group and share each others gifts. Read More
