Along with a strong background of fundamentals found in Faber's Adventures, Burnam's Step By Step, and Snell's Repertoire, I help students from five to nine with personal selections based on interest. Examples would be Disney songs (Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast), Gospel and Religious (Jesus Loves Me, the Dreydl song), or superheroes (Spiderman). I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. I try to keep the student as interested as possible,some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily.
