I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys. As a teacher, I am a student of teaching. Having studied under a number of very different teachers, I have learned that motivation to practice comes and goes, but passion is what builds a lasting foundation for musicianship. Because we can all be passionate about different aspects of the same subject, my teaching philosophy is that each student should be able to experience being passionate about music, whether their personality is ‘forte’ or ‘pianissimo.’ I am blessed to be a teacher that loves teaching, and I want to convey that to my students by the way that I teach. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time , and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio and music schools for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

I help students to find their forte. I discovered what motivates them through years of teaching in my studio, students' homes, music schools and instrument shops. Highlights of my teaching career include teaching at The L.A. Conservatory of Music and Eubanks Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, and presidency of the Music Teachers Association of California, San Fernando East Valley. While I played at the piano, several congregations have sung God’s praises. Read More

I constantly adapt and customize the lesson material according to the age of the student and the styles of music they are interested in learning. If a student has trouble with a particular concept, I might write an additional lesson for the student to get extra practice. For very young students, I create fun exercises in order to hold their interest. For example, I might include a coloring exercise that asks a student to "color the quarter notes red" or "draw a circle around the sixteenth rests". Read More
