I didn't expect to start teaching 3 years ago. It took me a year after graduating school to fully bring myself to the idea of teaching music, but as soon as I started I found a new joy of sharing music with others through learning. I began at a local music store in Dallas, TX in 2019 and it wasn't long after that I had a full schedule of both voice piano students of all ages, different levels, and different ranges of style. I first started teaching guitar in high school after i got a few lessons from someone i looked up to in high school. From then on i have loved to teach music to all ages!. My longest student started at 12 and by time he was 17 years old i told him he would be having to teach me a few things soon. we became friends and were in a band together for a while until i moved south, i loved having that connection, and i hope to find plenty others like that. it makes me feel good knowing others are gaining from my teaching so i do my very best! From way back in high school when I was the lead singer in a vocal group, I've always been singing, and I can say that singing is beautiful when emitted easily and well, fine as wine most anytime: celebrating births or mourning death, mating or contemplating, closing ranks or giving thanks, praising gods or turning clods of sod, selling soap or trying to cope, making magic moments day or night -- be it a keening wail, a chant or croon, a cheery singalong or a lone moan in the darkest hour before dawn. I began teaching singing lessons as a youth mentor more than a decade ago. I helped these young people develop their voices and performance skills, and supported them to perform songs in front of their school communities and families. I started teaching Balkan singing and percussion workshops with my band a decade ago. Around the same time, I was involved in a program that developed trainings and curricula for group and individual musical facilitation for individuals in hospice, inter-generational community ensembles in nursing care communities, and people with memory loss. I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
