I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. I first started teaching guitar in high school after i got a few lessons from someone i looked up to in high school. From then on i have loved to teach music to all ages!. I've been playing piano for 45 years, and have taken private lessons a total of 15 years with three different teachers.  Music is my passion, and so is teaching, so it brings me a lot of joy to share this with my students.  Music has taken me down many avenues in my life, starting at a young age.  My family are all musicians, so it has been a constant in my life.  At one point I played for church, and as a teenager I played for a ballet class.  Like I mentioned before, I've done many weddings and funerals, and look for any opportunity to play piano. This is how we check in with ourselves along the way to make sure that the student is getting the most out of their lessons.
