Overview:
I am a music teacher who has been singing since the age of five, playing drumset since the age of fifteen, and playing piano since the age of nineteen. Music will always be my first love and I always put the interests and concerns of my students first. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Music from Hunter College in 1999 and my Master's Degree in Music with a specialization in Ethnomusicology from Hunter College in 2005. I have been teaching drumset since 2004 and piano since 2012. I have taught at Mom's Music in Louisville, Kentucky and Ohio State University. I teach students from all ages and backgrounds and teach drumset at any level and piano from beginner level to intermediate. I performed in the school choir throughout my education and I also performed in my high school's concert band. My areas of specialty are rock, heavy metal and classical, though I have taught students the music of other styles such as rap, Christian pop, and country. My areas of interest include these styles plus jazz, Latin American music, and traditional African music.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught both privately and in a classroom setting. In addition to my school performances, I have also played with many bands since the age of seventeen. In general, I have been teaching since 2004 and it is the best job in the world! I absolutely love teaching and I always apply an enthusiastic mindset when I am teaching. Some of my students who have taken lessons with me have moved on to join the school band, play at concerts and competitions, and write their own music! Testimonial from BM: One of my student's parents recently commented to me in an email the following about her daughter: "She LOVES piano and she ADORES you...everytime we leave, she comments, 'Adrienne is the best piano teacher ever'."
METHODS USED
I prefer to teach my students the way I was taught, by learning to read and write music. There are students who prefer to learn by ear, but written instruction is always best for countless reasons. I use a combination of my own introductory lessons (which I customize depending on the age and maturity of the student) with published books and materials. For piano, I like to use the Alfred books and classical sheet music but I am always open to using other instructional books and songs that the student may want to learn. When it comes to drumset, I also use a combination of my own lessons and instructional books. For example, I use the famous "Syncopation" book for students when they are ready to learn snare drum and bass drum together. I can also transcribe songs for drumset and I program midi files of music for students when they are having trouble with a particular part of a song or a specific rhythmic pattern or concept.
LESSON STYLE
I constantly adapt and customize the lesson material according to the age of the student and the styles of music they are interested in learning. If a student has trouble with a particular concept, I might write an additional lesson for the student to get extra practice. For very young students, I create fun exercises in order to hold their interest. For example, I might include a coloring exercise that asks a student to "color the quarter notes red" or "draw a circle around the sixteenth rests". If there is a particular song that a student is interested in learning, I will do my best to find the music for it and if it is not available, I will transcribe a version myself. As far as drumset goes, I teach the students the way I was taught. I first teach them the basics on snare drum. Then we move to snare and bass and afterwards snare, bass drum, and hi-hat. When they've grasped the concept of grooves, we start working with the rest of the drumset. Regarding piano, I will first teach the student the basics (different note values, clefs, the organization of the keys, fingering, hand techniques, etc.) and very elementary songs. As we progress, they will start to learn chords, scales, and more advanced songs.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
