Overview:

I am a positive piano teacher and good with both children and adults. I use positive reinforcement that I learned from working with people with disabilities. I studied piano, theory and composition in college for three years and have studied with performing artists afterwards. I have worked with other professionals to compose a ballet and enjoy working with young people. I performed in college many times and have the experience to teach students the challenges in memorization and performance.

EXPERIENCE

My husband is in the Air Force so I have had the opportunity to teach students all over the country for over 15 years. I like using the Faber books so that the students learn their notes, theory, and all aspects of music. Students stay motivated because I meet as a group to play for each other and have small recitals. They of course have the option to participate in these activities. I am not a forceful or stressful teacher. Although I have been classically trained, I am willing to look at all kinds of music with a student.

METHODS USED

I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys.

LESSON STYLE

I am very positive about teaching my students. I have the knowledge to teach about the theory, technique and flow of the music up through the intermediate level. I don't necessarily stay with the music until it is perfect, because as the student learns more they can always come back to it and play it better. I do encourage my students to perform pieces they are doing well with, it's always fun to play for a small group and share each others gifts. Of course this is their option to participate.
