I'm a pianist, I've been playing playing the piano since I was 10 years old, currently 25 years old. A major highlight in my musical education was attending the high school for performing and visual arts in Houston Texas where I studied under Mr. Morales who shares my last name. I've performed with various chamber groups but I have spent my time mostly doing solo work. I consider myself primarily as a classical musician though I do enjoy various genres of music like jazz, and blues. My teaching philosophy is simply this , to bring out the artist in the student and to instill a mindset of diligence.
Though I have plenty of experience as a pianist I'm relatively new to the field of teaching. I have have several piano teachers throughout my life whose methodology I can draw from as experience. My experience with the various teachers I've had in my life has taught me one important lesson. Always pace yourself and never get too big for your boots. The basics or the fundamentals are just as important if not more so than mere virtuosity on your instrument. Always practice your scales, chords, and arpeggios so they sound even.
My approach to each student is individual and dependent on the experience of the student. For beginning students I focus almost exclusively on the fundamentals such as right and left hand independence, finger positioning, posture, and so on. Then I'll try introducing more complexity in increments. For adults, my method is the same as with children unless the adult in mind has demonstrated greater expertise on the instrument. If the adult is more advanced I'll introduce more difficult piano repertoire to challenge the student.
I try to make sure students can progress at their own pace based on their own skill level and experience with the instrument. I try to instill diligence patience and not being too hard on yourself as the top priorities. I want student and teacher interactions to be casual enjoyable and fun but at the same time serious with regards to the composer's intentions in the music. Like watering a flower it doesn't happen overnight the flower takes time to grow same with a piano student there needs to be incremental growth not overnight success.
