I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I taught concert band, jazz band, marching band, string orchestra, full orchestra, and general music. I have conducted a women's chorale and taught college as well. I've been teaching piano for 13 years, and was trained to do so by a woman who is skilled in the art of pedagogy.  That was my first job, and later on I opened my own private studio.  At one point I've had up to 45 students, and I've enjoyed working with all of them.  I give recitals 4 times a year which helps me see progress in my students.  We've tried all kinds of performances, some with themes.  The last one I did was a recital with only 70's pop and rock songs.  They really enjoyed that one!
