My teaching experience has been incredibly rewarding and I have a deep love for teaching. I believe that knowledge is best imparted when it is shared with enthusiasm and passion, and I strive to make my lessons engaging and enjoyable for my students. I also recognize the importance of love and compassion in education, as it can help foster a positive learning environment. My teaching philosophy focuses on building students' independent study habits, so that they can become self-sufficient learners. Read More

I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. Edward is a lead tenor who has performed roles ranging from The Mayor, in "Bye, Bye, Birdie" to Adonis, in John Blow's baroque opera, "Venus & Adonis". I try to keep the student as interested as possible, some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners." As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents. I can determine more upon working with the student over time. I definitely customize my lessons for each student, and don't compare one to the other. Some of them have been my students from early childhood to high school graduation. Read More

While getting my Masters in Music, I assisted teaching Music Theory at the University of Iowa. From there,I taught classes of students at the West Bank School Of Music in Minneapolis. From the Midwest to the Southwest: I taught students at Los Angeles schools and privately there also. I learned what were the best musical works with which to engage students: - Beloved classics by Beethoven, Chopin and others - New Age music by Winston, Einaudi, and Yanni - Gospel works in the best arrangements for a student's level, and - Folk music and works from American History, such as Ragtime, classic Blues, and Jazz-Age music. I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
