I've been playing piano for 45 years, and have taken private lessons a total of 15 years with three different teachers.  Music is my passion, and so is teaching, so it brings me a lot of joy to share this with my students.  Music has taken me down many avenues in my life, starting at a young age.  My family are all musicians, so it has been a constant in my life.  At one point I played for church, and as a teenager I played for a ballet class.  Like I mentioned before, I've done many weddings and funerals, and look for any opportunity to play piano. I started songwriting in my senior year but it wasnt until attending college that I took it seriously and pursued a career in original music. I grew up always listening to old-school RB and hip-hop, due to my family background and experiencing life as a young black American, so this style of music has a big influence in my life. My teaching experience started in the YMCA, my church worship band, with friends and friend's kids and evolved into private lessons with friends of friends via word of mouth. I have taught over 50 students in 10 years. All great students but I know 12 who have gone on to play music professionally in solo work, bands, movies and TV. I try to keep the student as interested as possible,some have shorter attention spans then others and for them maybe i will do 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. others who are really into it and do not want to leave i may teach them for an hour and that often turns into 2 or 3 hours of just jamming and having fun at no extra cost because without students a maestro is nothing but a musician playing music. i love to play along with students so they are more prepared when they go out and make music with others musicians and they can stay in time with a drummer more easily. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time , and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio and music schools for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
