I am a versatile music teacher. As an undergraduate at Ithaca College, I learned each band and orchestra instrument from the college instructor. For example, I learned to play the oboe from the oboe professor. We had to make our own reeds and use them to play our final exam. Every student is different and has different dreams, needs and goals. So, my teaching style relies heavily on communicating with my students and their parents, if applicable. My first lesson is focused on setting goals for yourself and unearthing musical dreams and ideas. The following lessons are about hitting that goal as soon as possible. Once that goal is hit, I set another goal with you, and so on. I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys. Typically with beginner students I work through the Alfred's Piano series (Adult and Children) and we focus on performance, technique, ergonomics, theory, and ear training. If a student wishes to work on composition or music production, after a proper foundation, we can explore that as well. I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. After completing my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance, I returned to UNM to attain a New Mexico Teaching License.
