I love setting lofty, reasonably challenging goals for my students and giving them music they think is too hard to play, and then watching their faces light up when they hit all the right notes they didn't know were possible to hit. I have multiple guitars of varying sizes for children and beginners, an upright piano (pictured), stage equipment, recording equipment, keyboards, tuners, strings, etc. I incorporate proper instrument care, music history and love convincing students to love new genres, styles and cultures of music. From my jazz training I help students improvise and create their own artistry. From my classical training I help students to learn to sight read, interpret the page correctly, play with a clean sound and play well in an ensemble. From my folk music training, I teach how to play from chord sheets, how to dirty up the sound to match the style and how to play in styles such as bluegrass, jazz, American fiddle, Irish and Scottish, Scandanavian, Klesmer or Classical. Along with a strong background of fundamentals found in Faber's Adventures, Burnam's Step By Step, and Snell's Repertoire, I help students from five to nine with personal selections based on interest. Examples would be Disney songs (Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast), Gospel and Religious (Jesus Loves Me, the Dreydl song), or superheroes (Spiderman). Ten to 14-year olds have used favorites from around the world -(everything from Greensleeves to Malaguena, In the Hall of the Mountain King and more superheroes like Batman and Iron Man), plus classics by Beethoven and Bach. I am a positive piano teacher and good with both children and adults. I use positive reinforcement that I learned from working with people with disabilities. I studied piano, theory and composition in college for three years and have studied with performing artists afterwards. I have worked with other professionals to compose a ballet and enjoy working with young people. I performed in college many times and have the experience to teach students the challenges in memorization and performance. Read More

My forty years teaching experience in music camps, public schools, and private studios includes general music, music theory, conducting, vocal, and instrumental instruction; coaching classes and individuals. Besides holding a Masters Degree in Music, I studied solfege, theory, and chamber music abroad and concertized as a chamber musician and soloist. Formal introduction to vocal study began with Richard Miller and Howard Hatton at the Oberlin Conservatory, and continued with Frank Baker in Vermont, Donald Bryant in Michigan, and Billie Lynn Daniels(Mrs. Read More

I've been teaching piano for 13 years, and was trained to do so by a woman who is skilled in the art of pedagogy. That was my first job, and later on I opened my own private studio. At one point I've had up to 45 students, and I've enjoyed working with all of them. I give recitals 4 times a year which helps me see progress in my students. We've tried all kinds of performances, some with themes. The last one I did was a recital with only 70's pop and rock songs. They really enjoyed that one! Read More

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My friends in high school got me into a lot of rock and heavy metal bands. One of them got me into Metallica and when I started listening to the "Ride the Lightning" album, I knew I wanted to play drums. I loved the speed and the energy. When I was growing up, there also weren't many female drummers around so it made me feel unique. But when it came down to it, I loved the energy and speed. Later, after discovering Rush, I continued to enjoy drumming on a more sophisticated level and enjoyed the technicality that drumming could offer in genres likes jazz and progressive rock and metal.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud of attaining both of my music degrees as well as having performed in choir and band all throughout school.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I would say that soloing and improvisation are the hardest aspects to master, because they not only require the capability of mastering one's instrument but also the right level of talent, dedication, and creativity. Two musicians can be at the same level of advancement, but their solos and improvisations will still be different. For example, Mike Portnoy is VERY influenced by Neil Peart and you can hear it in his grooves, but his solos sound very different from Neil's.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
As I've mentioned before, I use a combination of method books, songbooks, and my own teaching materials. For piano students, I use Alfred and Hal Leonard books along with classical songbooks. For drum students, I use the famous "Syncopation" book that you will see in most music stores, along with method books from various publishing companies and songbooks, especially as my students advance and can play more songs.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
It depends on what level the lessons are that the student is taking. If the student is a beginner, we will be covering basics and possibly playing some games or doing some exercises to cover the concepts and give the student some practice. If the student is more advanced, during the first part of the lesson I will review old concepts that the student might need more practice on or teach new concepts while the second half is normally dedicated to learning songs. Sometimes, I might switch the order of this to spice things up a bit or if the song being covered is more of a review that might be good for a warm-up for the student.
