I help students to find their forte. I discovered what motivates them through years of teaching in my studio, students' homes, music schools and instrument shops. Highlights of my teaching career include teaching at The L.A. Conservatory of Music and Eubanks Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, and presidency of the Music Teachers Association of California, San Fernando East Valley. While I played at the piano, several congregations have sung God’s praises. Read More

Diversity, high-energy, fast-paced, exploratory  I believe teaching music doesn’t just teach music—it teaches us life skills that are applicable to any field and any situation. My teaching philosophy is a mix of many ideas, and I believe it is more successful the more places I "steal" ideas from. As a music teacher at the 21st Century Public Academy, and the 2nd, being my job in the Army as a member of the 44th Army Band. Read More

I incorporate a well-rounded approach with my students by teaching musical skills beyond their particular instruments such as aural skills and theory. I use my background and training in Kodaly and Orff to teach music like a language by directing my students through experience and practice of the concept for better understanding. I use positive reinforcement and keep things fun for all ages. In each lesson, I work on aural skills and theory through fun warm-up games that get gradually more challenging as time continues. I always keep the students in mind with progression and excitement constantly. The throwback from week to week will give both the student and teacher a insight what has to be improved and advanced. I have many students playing professionally in bands and orchestra's as well. Each student has individual needs that will be in conjunction with the personality of the student a great rapport with both of us or group I am working with. Read More

I first started teaching guitar in high school after i got a few lessons from someone i looked up to in high school. From then on i have loved to teach music to all ages!. My longest student started at 12 and by time he was 17 years old i told him he would be having to teach me a few things soon. we became friends and were in a band together for a while until i moved south, i loved having that connection, and i hope to find plenty others like that. it makes me feel good knowing others are gaining from my teaching so i do my very best! Typically with beginner students I work through the Alfred's Piano series (Adult and Children) and we focus on performance, technique, ergonomics, theory, and ear training. If a student wishes to work on composition or music production, after a proper foundation, we can explore that as well. Once a student has reached proficiency in the Alfred's series then I like to move into classical or other music as that a student might be interested in. Read More

Instruments: Piano Drums Keyboard

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My friends in high school got me into a lot of rock and heavy metal bands. One of them got me into Metallica and when I started listening to the "Ride the Lightning" album, I knew I wanted to play drums. I loved the speed and the energy. When I was growing up, there also weren't many female drummers around so it made me feel unique. But when it came down to it, I loved the energy and speed. Later, after discovering Rush, I continued to enjoy drumming on a more sophisticated level and enjoyed the technicality that drumming could offer in genres likes jazz and progressive rock and metal.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud of attaining both of my music degrees as well as having performed in choir and band all throughout school.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I would say that soloing and improvisation are the hardest aspects to master, because they not only require the capability of mastering one's instrument but also the right level of talent, dedication, and creativity. Two musicians can be at the same level of advancement, but their solos and improvisations will still be different. For example, Mike Portnoy is VERY influenced by Neil Peart and you can hear it in his grooves, but his solos sound very different from Neil's.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
As I've mentioned before, I use a combination of method books, songbooks, and my own teaching materials. For piano students, I use Alfred and Hal Leonard books along with classical songbooks. For drum students, I use the famous "Syncopation" book that you will see in most music stores, along with method books from various publishing companies and songbooks, especially as my students advance and can play more songs.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
It depends on what level the lessons are that the student is taking. If the student is a beginner, we will be covering basics and possibly playing some games or doing some exercises to cover the concepts and give the student some practice. If the student is more advanced, during the first part of the lesson I will review old concepts that the student might need more practice on or teach new concepts while the second half is normally dedicated to learning songs. Sometimes, I might switch the order of this to spice things up a bit or if the song being covered is more of a review that might be good for a warm-up for the student.
