I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

Seeing my students develop a passion for music is very rewarding! Every student is an individual and moves at their own pace, I work to asses the areas that I feel the student needs to focus on, and keep a positive, encouraging approach to working through the challenges that playing the piano presents. With both younger and adult students, I give feedback on the pieces by writing notes in a notebook, and or the music itself. Read More

I like using the Faber books for children and supplement with classical pieces from Snell. For adults, I see where they are and use adult beginning books or other appropriate material depending on their interests. I usually start each student learning their major chords through the keys as soon as they are physically able, because once you learn your chords, sight reading and other playing becomes much easier. i also teach scales because if you can play your scales you can learn to play in all different keys. Hello! I have enjoyed teaching children, competing, accompanying for universities, studying music theory, playing for weddings and nursing homes, and playing at my church for the past eleven years. My piano experience spans over 20 years now, having included exciting opportunities such as the 2016 New Years jazz concert in London at Codagen Hall (Queen Elizabeth wrote everyone a letter thanking them for helping with the celebration!). These past several years have taught me that teaching is an entirely different privilege, skill, and joy to me as I grow in my musicianship alongside my students. Read More

I have played for 23 years and I love teaching all kinds of music. I have no college degree or anything fancy but i have the desire to teach others what I have learned. Music is my passion and I hope to inspire many others to play just as I have been inspired to keep playing all these years by my father who learned how to play guitar with me. Read More

While getting my Masters in Music, I assisted teaching Music Theory at the University of Iowa. From there,I taught classes of students at the West Bank School Of Music in Minneapolis. From the Midwest to the Southwest: I taught students at Los Angeles schools and privately there also. I learned what were the best musical works with which to engage students: - Beloved classics by Beethoven, Chopin and others - New Age music by Winston, Einaudi, and Yanni - Gospel works in the best arrangements for a student's level, and - Folk music and works from American History, such as Ragtime, classic Blues, and Jazz-Age music. In lessons, I emphasize enjoying the process of learning. Learning an instrument does not happen over night. It takes years of practice and can be a joyful task if one enjoys the process. I send my students home with new goals each week to help guide their practice. Read More
