For beginner students, I start with the fundamentals of music and we work our way up to integrating repertoire that they will eventually be able to perform in recitals and shows! I am a very flexible teacher and I understand firsthand that to remain interested in learning music, a student needs to feel included in the choices regarding what they are working on. With that in mind, I like to use both repertoire that a student has brought in, and repertoire that I choose very carefully to suit a particular student's strengths and challenges. Read More

I always try to teach the student how to improvise, because I think that improvisation is the heart of music, is where you can learn how to express yourself instantly. I encourage a continuity in the practice, it doesn't have to be 3 hours a day, it could even de 20 minutes a day, as long as you develop a discipline for it. I also use my own material that will fit the level and skills of my current student, in addition to exisitng repertoire. Read More

Growing up in Chicago there was no shortage of great music. Rock, jazz, the symphony; I tried to soak it all up, and it's that approach that I bring to lessons. With 15 years of teaching experience, I tailor lesson plans to the student's intrests and goals.  I aim to balance reading and playing by ear, learning technique, and nurturing the student's individual playing style.  Most importantly, I always encourage students to notice when they sound great. As a teacher I take pride in seeing my students grow and develop their own personal connection to music! It is very important to set goals so I encourage students to set their own goals of learning as well as set some lesson oriented goals for them as well. Finding out what interests the student makes my job challenging but fun in the way I can design lessons that will better assist growth! Read More

My teaching style is two part. Many teachers approach each student with the same routine and technique, and don't really listen to the issues the student has or wants to discuss. I listen to students' thoughts and observations, and address their issues and concerns specifically; as well as coming in with my own plan for what can be improved and how to go about achieving the students' goals and what needs to occur for improvement in my professional opinion. I'm a firm believer in self motivation. Having a good teacher is important but having a great student is paramount. I love to develop concepts that work for the individual student whom I'm relaying ideas to. Whether it is theory or academia or the idea of honest expression, all these facets of teaching have always been inspiring to me. I can mock up many different playing situations to accommodate any level of player. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Violin Viola Mandolin Keyboard

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
There are too many to list: For solo classical repertoire: I love The French: Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Milhaud. I tend to favor impressionists too like Cyril Scott and have recorded a great amount of repertoire all ready. For concerti I haven't yet performed: I would love to play the Leroy Anderson Concerto in C, The Leith Steven's Night Song Concerto, John Ireland's Piano Concerto and more Mozart. For musical theatre: I love all the standard repertoire and love to perform them all I also love to record my own original piano works.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I have great background in art as well and film history. I have taught film noir, Pre-Code and MGM cinema courses which I love. I'm a huge classic movie buff. I love visual art and have background in sketching and coloring. I love yoga and veganism and have written already 2 books on vegan cooking. I'm a clinical hypnotherapist and love working with clients in regressive sessions and teaching seminars. I enjoy metaphysical studies and have background as a psychic/tarot reader and astrologer and find this fascinating. I'm a computer web designer and I also design websites for my clients.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Jazz Piano: 1950s LA cool Jazz standards, 1930s stride, ragtime, coastal smooth jazz bossa nova, and romantic Liberace-esque piano Classical Piano: MOZART, and the Impressionists and French Composers Harpsichord: Scarlatti, French Baroque, and 20th century works such as the concerti by De Falla and Poulenc. Voice: Great American Songbook Standards, Mozart and Operatic REpertoire Violin: Celtic fiddle My expertise is vast and would take to long to cover here. I love all music with maybe the exception of Heavy Metal rock and rap.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I come from a musical family and thus it was required to be versatile. As a child I studied piano, harpsichord, electric keyboard/synthesizer, organ, violin, viola, mandolin, as well as ballroom dancing, ballet, acting and musical theatre and operatic voice. My main love is piano and voice but I'm also passionate about harpsichord though I don't currently own one. I enjoy fiddle as well. I would love to learn classical harp someday if time and money permits. I believe that most musicians eventually study many areas of the arts.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I come from a long famous line of musicians. My great great maternal grandfather Canuto Berea Rodriguez was a famous Galician Spanish composer who wrote symphonies, operas, piano music and song cycles. He was also the mayor of La Caruna, Spain, and owned a family music publishing house. My mother is a noted opera singer from New York and my dad a country western performer. I have 5 siblings that are all musical and many nieces and nephews that are all prodigies in the arts. My nephew Matthew is a concert pianist who has already played Chopin and Beethoven standards by age 10 and is working on Rhapsody in Blue.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I knew since I was 3 I would always make a career in the arts. I prefer however to be self employed. I like to teach with my own methods I know work and set my own hours and decide whom I work on. I didn't like teaching college/university due to the strict regulations, red tape of the California School systems, budgets cuts etc. In fact I worked 60 hour weeks and was stressed and exhausted. Ironically owning my own business I make the same salary for 20 hours a week and have a lot of free time to concertize, record albums and write books.

Four Chord Songs

...easy to sing and play to.   “Creep,” by Radiohead   Radiohead is a band that’s now known for their sophisticated and somewhat complicated approach to writing music, but this phenomenal band’s songs weren’t always so intricate. “Creep,” is the most popular song by the British band by a long shot, and it’s a simple song even by the standards of conventional pop music. This song is not only built off of the same four chords, but also the same progression from beginning to end.       “Up On Melancholy Hill,” by Gorillaz   Let’s stay in the U.K. for... Read More

...play it with a low G string as well.   Baritone Ukulele   A baritone ukulele is larger than a tenor uke and is tuned a fifth lower. This means that the tuning is the same tuning as the high four strings of a guitar. This gives it a sound that is perfect for musicians who want a sound a little higher pitched than guitar but not quite as high pitched as a smaller ukulele. It is still smaller than a banjo as well, so a baritone ukulele is still very easy to travel with.   Bass Ukulele In the last few years a new type of ukulele has been ... Read More

The Truth About Elementary Music

...frequency of elementary music instruction, on the whole, elementary music teachers see each and every child in the building at least once a week. That is, music is not an elective in the primary grades, since many students are on a rotation of classes outside of their grade level classrooms. That means (hopefully) in addition to physical education, library, and art, each student has the privilege to attend a general elementary music class. Since the time I was in school, choices for electives in the secondary grades have exploded, both competing for popularity and time in students’ schedules. With some exceptions, it is ... Read More

Jazz Scales: The Diminished Scale

...of scales called symmetric scales. The scales in this group include the chromatic scale, the diminished scale, the whole tone scale, and the augmented scale. Symmetric scales have an even number of notes and repeated intervals or interval sequences. They also have limited transpositions. The major scale and the minor scales, and most other scales, need to be transposed into twelve keys to be practiced completely. The diminished scale only needs to be transposed into three keys. C, Eb, F#, and A are the same diminished scale; C#, E, G, and Bb are the same diminished scale; and D, F, Ab, and B are the same ... Read More
