When I teach, I treat you like a colleague and I require your full attention during the 30-60 min class. Singing takes a lot of discipline, sweat and abdominal work (for the high notes). If you are aiming for the stars, you need to be trained like one. I can make you understand how voice projection works, so you know how to best use your voice and protect it. Every student progresses at their own pace. Read More

I've taught lessons to students since I was 19 years old, and music lessons to students since I was 22. Prior to the age of 22, my teaching experience was as a math tutor for the SAT, but that experience was invaluable in becoming comfortable with teaching generally, learning firsthand what techniques work best for teaching at a 1 on 1 level vs teaching a small group, how best to communicate material new to my students clearly and effectively, and to identify the need, when it arises, to spend a little more time on a given concept or topic. I have been teaching privately over 19 years, currently online and remotely, as well as almost 10 years at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. The majority of my students have been young, college age students between 17-30 years of age. I have also taught children as young as 4 and adults up to 69. Many of my students have been international, thus I have experience in clearly stating the goals in an understandable and convenient way. Read More

For me seeing one of my students develop a passion for music is such areward! It is very important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I am constantly encouraging students to practice as slow as they need to. This eables students to have realistic goals each week that can be attained. It is important to take the time to acknowledge students and their accomplishments. This helps keep the learning fun and energetic. Read More

I follow the type of music they are interested in and I also suggest other genres. Students who pursue Musical Theatre are encouraged to get their own books with audio accompaniments. I am always willing to suggest fitting songs to all of my students based on their level, range, style and personality. With Adults singers I have a flexible curriculum based on their musical background/interest and goals. I offer vocal technique for contemporary commercial music, also musicianship (rhtyhm and ear training) and incorporate style into their songs. Read More

I began teaching at Humboldt State University in 2010, through an education program for children ages 6-15. During the year and a half I worked there, I discovered a genuine love for sharing the passion and enthusiasm I had for music with my students. After 2 1/2 more year of leading student ensembles, teaching children and adults individually and in groups, and giving private lessons out of my home, I have amassed enough experience to feel confident teaching any student passionate about learning. I love to acknowledge and take notice of the accomplishments of my students. Through this process they are encouraged to dive deeper into the learning process and are curious about varying aspects of music. Typically I will recommend certain books or provide students with sheet music. I have access to various resources and videos of some of the most famous session players. Depending on the indiviudal interest of the student I can cater my teaching style to fit their specific stylistic and muscial interests. Read More

Instruments: Bass Guitar Double Bass

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I personally think the hardest thing to master on bass is being able to play fluently up and down the neck in different positions. There is a lot of specific geometry involved with the bass, so you have to get your fingers to connect with your ear in every positions. Every instrument has its challenge - for example, piano isn't presented with the same challenges as bass. It is very straight forward and linear in its presentation, so playing in different positions isn't as much of a challenge. Everything is laid out for the eye to see. However, if you want to be an excellent pianist, you must be able to have a rich understanding of harmony and have left and right hand independence.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I'm still not completely sure what drew me into playing bass. I think a part of it was that it was laid back and cool and different than everyone wanting to be all the way in front like Guitar or Sax. When I first started playing bass, I was influenced by Flea and John Paul Jones, but as I grew older, turned to jazz bassists such as Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Richard Davis. I’ve appreciated the tone and function of the instrument from the get-go. It is my main instrument, but ironically have always been more influenced by other instruments than bass itself. Bass, to me, is merely a segue for expression.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
The past couple of years I have finally been able to fully express myself through my band Jigsaw Falling, which has been a big relief to me as an artist, in which I am the vocalist, lyricist and bassist. I was able to create something stylistically I’ve had never heard before, that I’ve always wanted to hear, thanks to my fellow band mates Arturo Lopez and Jason Austan, who share a similar vision, creating a unique fusion of progressive rock, jazz, hip-hop, funk and latin. I tend to write about social issues, personal turmoil and/or philosophies. Its heavier subject matter but I think it’s important to write about what you are truly feeling, and express it in a way that is unique to yourself in a way that you’ve never heard. Those emotions are going translate to something real, and other people out there are going to relate. This also remains true for any musical situation that I’m presented with.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
One particular student I was presented with was the second chair bassist for the high school Los Angeles All City Jazz Band. He was one of the more advanced students I have had, especially given his age. I felt very inspired and motivated as an instructor because he was very inspired and motivated as a student, which is something that always brings me a lot of joy. The particular challenge with him was teaching him to not think of jazz in such a black and white academic way, but instead to really learn the language.
