Instruments: Piano
I have been teaching students of all ages in my home studio for the last 20 years. I've found that a combination of modern and classical music and music genres that the students enjoy can help students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice. I enjoy having recitals to help the students to feel good about their accomplishments. I am a very patient teacher that gives the students much encouragement and positive reinforcement. Read More

My experiences teaching are fundamentally positive in nature. I know each student is different and unique in his or her way. I also teach lessons in German and/or English as needed. Setting a goal at the first lesson is important to me. I provide recitals twice a year for both strings and piano. For piano I offer a grand piano sent back from Vienna, refurbished and beautiful in tone. Read More

I am an instructor who tailors lessons based on the student's desires. Having been a performer since I was 13 years old, I work as a musical coach. My performing experience varies from pop, rock, country, jazz, hard rock, contemporary Christian and classical. I am a classically trained pianist and vocalist. Currently I play in a trio that performs regularly at nursing homes. I love bringing joy to the elderly by playing their favorite sing alongs as well as teaching them current music. Read More

I'm a laid-back but passionate music instructor who really enjoys teaching students of all ages and all ability levels. I have been teaching regularly for 5 years and have learned immensely from the experiences myself, which I use to better teach students now. I have earned degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Illinois, and have performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist throughout the Midwest and East Coast. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the universal drum exercises every drummer should know, like the Ted Reed's book "syncopation" or the very classic "stick control". These exercises are mostly for warm ups, hand coordination, internalizing rhythm, and speed training. Depending on their musical background, I often like to introduce basic music theory concepts just so we are able to speak the same language. Once a foundation is set, I quickly move to what the student's interests are. Read More

I try to strike a balance between music lessons being serious and being fun. I expect my students to practice almost every day and I expect that the parents will be part of keeping them accountable for scheduling that practicing. Lessons are a combination of learning technical skills and learning songs, which usually are mostly classical songs with a few contemporary songs thrown in for motivation. Read More

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A practice is different according to the purpose. If you want to work for performance including concert or opera. You have to study a lots of things. For example, foreign diction (Italian, French, German etc.) are very important. Each language has a different accent and intonation. Those things should be trained many times. After that singers can be allowed to sing. Second, if singers want to practice their sound I strongly recommend to use natural voice through humming, lip trill, pure vowels.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I normally used to use a vocal pedagogy book as a reference. However, students do not need to use it. It will be used for making them understand specific terms. There are good example about our body. Also, the most useful information is that the book explains wrong information about teaching singer. It helps me to fix students who have bad habit. Second, for better understanding, I generally used video from youtube or NATS website (Nation Association of Teachers of Singing).
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I decided to study voice after praying a lots. During the prayer, God told me He wants me to praise Him. So, I was really inspired Him. That makes me to make strong decision.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
When I was young my goal was being a math teacher. So, if I didn't study music I might be a math teacher.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My music background is basically from church. So, I love to listen to christian music.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I can play several instruments. The first instrument was a piano. i started to learn it when I was really young. Other instruments are a guitar and a drum. I participated church band since I have been middle school student. I really enjoyed it as singing.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream role is Rigoletto in Opera "Rigoletto." It is hard to find title role for the baritone. This opera is one of them and require high technique. Furthermore, this opera have been loved by audiences in the world. Fortunately, I performed this opera a couple of years ago and I got good review by Twin Cities Art Reader. However, I didn't perform with orchestra. So, if I have one more chance to sing that role I want to perform with the orchestra.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
D.M.A. University of Minnesota, Voice performance
M.M. University of Texas at Austin, Voice performance
M.M. Myoungji University, Voice performance
B.M. Myoungji University, Voice performance
I have four degrees for voice performance in Korea and America. To get those degrees, I spent 15 years for studying. Even though it took long time I was able to know how to sing well.
