Overview:
Plays piano and brass instruments in a number of bands and ensembles and teaches private lessons for beginning to advanced level students. I can teach any keyboard or band instrument. I have been teaching for over 50 years. I’m a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I’ve taught in the Twin Cities, Northern Minnesota and weapstern Wiscinsin. Be taught all woodwind, all brass and all percussion instruments, and many years of piano lessons .
EXPERIENCE
Public School Music teacher 33+ years ( now retired) Taught Piano for over 40 years Director of two community bands including current Crosstown Community Band church keyboardist, accompanist and choir director Working musician in several bands My teaching goes back to before my college days, teaching at a music store. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress, and gain a passion for music.
METHODS USED
I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie. I keep my instruction as engaging and fun as possible, no matter what age and level of expertise the students levels are at. I am open to new ways of teaching.
LESSON STYLE
Traditional but relaxed, with the goal of helping the students to reach their maximum level by building on success. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my student at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students’ desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.By trying to find out what inspires the student.

Mr. B worked with my middle schooler, and helped him find the joy in making music. Mr. B worked hard to find music that would be fun and interesting. He not only taught my son the proper methods and artistic elements, he also made it fun. They played together in every lesson. The foundation and training provided by Mr. B has helped my son be chosen for honor bands in middles school and be successful in band as a high schooler. Many kids drop out of band in high school, but I?m grateful that my son is staying engaged. I credit Mr. B for helping my son find his talent and continue to grow it.

Mr. B is one of the best overall teachers, of music or otherwise, I've seen. He is kind, patient, organized, musically skilled,, and knows what it takes to get students from A to B for whatever they are working on. He listens, and he draws on the students interests and strengths. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Bravo Maestro! Richard B. is a very pleasant and incredible music teacher, skilled musician, brilliant educator! He is limitless, he has helped us greatly! We have had very good music teachers from schools and well known outside resources; Richard B. beats them all hands down. We could not be happier luckily getting him! Richard B. brings joy, motivates, and inspires. Our sons primary instrument is the Baritone/Euphonium, then trumpet, piano, and others. Richard was great with all! Thanks to Richard, our son came home from All-State music judging competition with a rare Perfect score, and a Superior rating, and was also chosen as Best Site Performance. Great scholarship possibilities! The adjudicator wisely expressed the richest of kudos to Mr. Richard B. doing a fine job with our son. Richard B. is a great man and superb teacher! Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order and leads to all that is good and just and beautiful. Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul. - Plato
