Overview:
I am a diverse bassist, vocalist/lyricist and composer based in Los Angeles, CA. I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. My influences range from jazz, hip-hop, classical, funk/soul, rock, alternative/indie and pop music, and am inspired by artists and composers such as Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, George Russell, Bach, Edgar Meyer, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B. & Rakim, Mos Def, to James Brown, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Beatles, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Arctic Monkeys, Cut Copy and more.
EXPERIENCE
Having written, recorded and performed with many artists and musicians, as well as perusing my own music on many notable stages (House of Blues, The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Mint etc.) in and outside of the LA area, I began my musical journey at 8 years old in the renown Tucson Boys Chorus. This developed my ear and an understanding of harmony at a young age, eventually taking me to New York City singing in an honors choir. When I was 12 years old, I showed an interest in the bass guitar and decided to pick it up and quickly began expanding my musical palette. The love for the instrument carried on strongly throughout my teenage years where I performed in my acclaimed high school jazz band for all four years, involving me in local competitions, as well as performing in Chicago.
I furthered my musical education attending college at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, CA and earned my Bachelor Degree in music performance, studying upright bass under Putter Smith, and electric bass with bassists such as Brian Allen, Stu Hamm, Michael Mennell and Ernest Tibbs. I also took on a strong interest studying jazz under Joe Bagg and Jamie Rosenn, and arranging with Peter Hume. I am active on the Los Angeles music scene today whether I am recording, performing live on stage, an enthusiastic private lesson instructor, a thoughtful lyricist, or writing commercially. I am also partnered with owner Jason Austan in operating our new project studio Backyard Recorders located in the Valley Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, which is now accepting clients. I am also the bassist, vocalist and lyricist of my esteemed passion project Jigsaw Falling, who have released their self-titled debut EP and is anticipated to release more music in 2019 .
METHODS USED
I typically start off by assessing if the student is a beginner, intermediate or advanced. Once the student's skill level has been assessed, a lesson plan will be formulated to best fit their needs. We will mostly focus on technique and theory, as well as creative musical aspects. I have created my own lesson plan when for teaching the bass guitar, but am still flexible to the needs of the student. When it comes teaching upright bass, I teach technique out of the F. Simandl New Method for Double Bass, which the student can purchase online as hard copy or PDF.
LESSON STYLE
I provide a broad understanding of the instrument, with years of study to back it up, taking a conceptual, theoretical, technical and applicable approach, while stimulating the most important aspect: creativity. I get to the root of what the student needs to know eliminating excess, in order to speed up the learning process. Nothing originates from a strictly academic place, so I promote a natural free flowing environment, catered to the uniqueness of the individual in order to encourage study and inspire innovation. It is very rewarding to see a student fulfill their potential.
